I have an older Gateway PC. Model 703GE that has always worked pretty good. Two days ago, out of the blue, the audio quit. I checked Sounds and Audio devices and see the message that the Audio Device

it would seem that your audio card or audio processor chip has died. If this is a desktop (or tower) pc, you may have an audio card plugged into the motherboard (mainboard). This can be removed and replaced. If the audio plugs come directly out of the motherboard you should still have open slots on the motherboard where you can plug in a new replacement sound card. what you need to do is determine what type of slots you have open, they are most likely standard PCI slots. You would need to go to a computer store like Best Buy and ask them to point out a new audio card to install in your system it should come with a disc which includes the drivers needed and installation instructions.

I just downloaded the Ableton live 8 preview and no sound is coming out. Can someone help with this?

You must go to the Control Panel - Audio and change the setting to use the new sound card. There is a pull down list for you to select the sound system. Test it with the sounds box at the bottom of the audio window. Make sure the software for the new card is installed. To properly install new hardware you must reboot the computer. Then the Windows main screen will say "New Hardware Found" in the lower right screen. When finished it will tell you the the Installation is Complete or Ready to Use.

If the audio does not come on go to Control Panel / System / Hardware and see if there is a yellow astrek next to the Audio. If so it is not working properly. Click on the Audio to bring up the item. The right click on the sound card title and select "Update Driver". Your computer will search for the new software already installed which is compatible with the sound card and install it. If the astrek goes away your audio should work fine.

If the sound card is not on the audio list, check to make sure that it is properly installed on the motherboard, all the way in with no metal contacts showing above the card holder. Also look for any wires which may have been caught in the slot when you put it in. And finally make sure your audio cable is plugged into the new sound card (and not still in the old location).

install sound drivers..if drivers are installed then goto control panel --> sound and audio devices --- > then click that and see whether any SoundCard is installed or not.. for example- Realtek AC 97 . it should be there .. are u getting sound at the startup of the windows or not...check that ...if sound comes then the problem is with the software u are using to play the movies .... try to install another software ...i personally recommend vlc media player.. to get goto www.download.com and search for VLC media player ....download it and install ...your problem will be solved..

No Audio Output Device is Installed

If you are going to use your restore disks, the system will go back to the factroy settings, which means it will work in a way it worked when you purchased it. So as a result you should surely have your sound card working.
However any software or data which you loaded after purchasing will be lost as well.

Also before using the PC restore, you may also try the system restore.
System restore is a utility using which we can take the system back to a date when it was working fine. It will undo all the changes happened after the chosen date.

Steps for system Restore
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.
Than choose a date in the calender when you think that it was working fine.

Any software and programs installed after the chosen date will not be there. You should not loose your data as well.

I hope that i have answered your query.
All the best
Sammy

No sound coming from my computer

Have you tried restarting your computer? If that didn't work try deleting the program for your sound card and try reinstalling it. If that doesn't work try a system restore, now depending on your operating system the fallowing information my not be accurate. This is for Windows XP Home edition, Click on Start>help and support>system restore. Then it will ask you what date you want to restore it to, then pick a date, then click continue or next and it should restore your system to that date. Hope this helped=)

Sound breaking in all audio and video players

This is very likely, as you note, a driver problem. Start by installing the latest DirectX package from Microsoft and rebooting.

In device manager, find the sound card and then click UNINSTALL HARDWARE or REMOVE HARDWARE. Go into ADD REMOVE PROGRAMS and remove all sound drivers and software you see. REBOOT. The system will now find the "new" sound card and do a new install. Try giving it the latest drivers you can find first.

Breaking up audio is also sometimes due to resource conflicts. In device manager open the properties window for the sound card and generally bugger around trying to change the resource allocations (IRQs etc.) and rebooting - this sometimes works.

If this doesn't help, you need to find and install legacy drivers, one after another, for that sound card. Also try identifying what chip set the sound card is, and going to the manufacturer of the card and looking for old drivers.

Good luck.
