Problem for Kenmore 64742 Electric Dryer

Light comes on but won't turn

I have a 70 series Kenmore dryer. I had some towels in it the other day, they finally got dry but the outside was very very hot to the touch, more than usual. Smelled like something was burning, but just slightly. The light inside comes on but when you hit the start button it doesn't do anything. I cleaned out the vent line. Any ideas? It is only about 5yrs old.

- Thanks! I've had a fuse replaced a couple of times in the last year but still never seemed to dry completely sometimes. Guess they may have missed the real problem..

- Yeah, it never dries my towels on the first cycle, maybe it just isn't built for it. I will try to find the parts on the next two days.. Thanks a lot. I already used my blower to clean out the vent line..

- I just replaced the thermal fuse and it is working. I also used my blower to clean out the lint from the dryer line and blew all the lint from the back of the dryer. The top still seems a little bit hot so I am a bit nervous. I am going to throw some clothes in it and see how it goes. Do you think I should replace the thermostat too just in case?

- I put a few loads in, seems to dry pretty good. The outside is kind of hot but I don't smell anything burning. I will keep an eye on it.. Thanks for all your help!!!

- I ran the dryer for about 30 minutes tonight and the clothes were very very hot, as well as the outside. I'm ordering both thermostat's to replace so hopefully that will take care of the problem. I will let you know and thanks again!!

- It was the vent, it was full of lint. I bought a line cleaner off Amazon and cleaned it out, works great. Thanks

Sounds like a thermostat problem. The operating thermostat was not working properly and now the thermal Fuse is open and requires replacing. If you only replace the fuse and not what caused it it will blow again. Because it was cycling on the Hi Limit that should be replaced as well.

- You need heat and airflow for the dryer to work. Lack of airflow will create overheating. So will over loading the dryer with large bulky items, sleeping bags, comforters, quilts.

- Long dry times have several other possibilities
  1. Poor air flow
  2. Overloading resulting in #1
  3. Washer not spinning out enough moisture
The fuse blowing is a sign of overheating do to, too much heat or poor airflow. Let me know what the problem is when you find it.

- Hard to say if really too hot or not without measuring the temp inside the drum with a load. Eric
