Question about HP PhotoSmart C4180 All-in-One Color InkJet Photo Printer
Hi, I am having problem with my new ink cartridges. I installed them and then went through the alignment process and printed test page. The message that comes up in the window is "Print cartridge alignment failed." There is a little exclamation (!) mark that blinks all the time. Can you help me resolve my problem? Thanks. Dan
Well, what i did, and it seemed to work, in the short run anyway. i took and threw my hp in the back of a waste management truck, then i called amazon.com and i ordered a new epson printer,

When i had the cartridge alignment failed garbage and needed to scan stuff, I turned printer off, then back on, and when it said alignment needed, I held setup and pressed OK, then it let me do it

I think this will work. At least it worked for me. I went through the printer SETUP button. Selected the TOOLS option, then pressed OK. First, I selected the CLEAN PRINT CARTRIDGES option. Wait until it finished. Second, I selected the ALIGN PRINT CARTRIDGES, under same TOOLS menu.
when the alignement process ended, it showed ot be succesful in the printer screen.

After doing some testing (I'm having this problem myself), the problem appears to be with the black ink cartridge. Before I replaced my cartridges, I was using a 343 & a 348 (both tri-colours). Both were running low so I replaced the 343 for another 343, but put a 337 (black) in place of the 348. This is when I started getting problems with alignment. As a test, I took the 337 (black) out, put the old 348 (special tricolour) in again & tried aligning - it worked fine, so it would appear that the 337 black cartridge is the problem. Maybe HP have issued a duff batch, as it's an official HP product. I'm expecting another 337 any day now, so will try again with the new one & see if I get the same problems. But for those of you still having a problem, I'd suggest changing your black 337 cartridge. Sorry this is a bit long winded, but I thought I'd better explain in full! Hope that helps!

I had this annoying problem and finally fixed it.
Steps I tried that did NOT work:
1. Align print cartridges (printer menu and computer settings menu)
2. Clean the cartridges (printer menu and computer settings menu)
3. Physically clean the cartridges myself using cotton swabs and water
4. Unplug the printer from the back of the printer while on to "reset" the printer
5. Tried switching from everyday printing to photo printing, but would not print since I still had the alignment error message.
The problem seems to be with the ink cartridge(s) themselves, not the printer per se. Both cartridges must be aligned properly for the printer to work. I use 93 tri-color ink and 98 black ink. Ultimately I found TWO of the new black ink cartridges I had purchased were defective and would not align, so I had to discard them even though I'd just purchased them. The third 98 black ink cartridge finally produced a successful alignment.
Thus, the solution as frustrating as it sounds is to keep buying more HP ink until you get both a tri-color and black cartridge - neither of which are defective - to work together.

Is this before or after you run the alignment. Does the page print out? Do you lay it on the glass and press scan?

According to your problem first make sure that you have installed the cartridges properly. Go the the printer properties in control panel and follow the steps open the printinging preferences tab> maintainance tab > Ink cartridge replacement> then the window will show the process of the replacement of ink cartridge. Follow those steps of replacement. Then let the cartridge be processed, it will take a few time. And then your cartridge replacement will be finished. Then align the cartridges from the alignment option in printing preferences as well. If it doesn't solve your problem then the cartridges are faulty, replace a new set of cartridge is recomended.
