SOURCE: My Samsung CLP-510 printer shuts down frequently for paper jam. However, there is no paper jam. To fix, I turn off the power to the printer for 30 seconds and after turning the power back on the paper

95% of the time when a printer reports a jam and there is no jam to be found it is because the machine has failed to pick up and feed the paper in the first place. The machine has several sensors along the paper path that detect paper movement, these sensors are 'expecting' the paper to arrive at a certain time and trigger them in order to activate other parts required in the printing process. When the sensors dont get triggered by the movement of paper at correct intervals the machine just assumes there is a jam, it doesnt know and doesnt know how to report that there was simply no feed.

Now, the cause of a machine failing to pick up paper can be (mainly) two things, either the feed rollers are worn or they are just dirty. Feed rollers are just like tyres on your car, they have a tread required for grip, when the tread wears down there is less grip on the paper, it slips, no feed, jam. However it takes a lot of work to wear out rollers (like 100k pages or more) it is more likely the rollers are just dirty, as a printer and copier repairman dirty rollers are by far the most common problem i see, they get caked with a combination of paper dust, environmental dust, moisture and other airborn nasty stuff thats floating around that we dont want to know about. basically this stuff accumulates on the rollers and causes the same results as if the rollers were worn.

I use a special roller cleaner but metholayted spirits on a clean white cotton rag will do it.

To locate the feed rollers for your machine:

You will need to remove the paper cassette/draw and put aside.
Facing the front of your machine you will need to tilt the machine backwards and support it at an approx 45degree angle.

Looking under the tilted machine to the right you should see a metal rod assembly that has two 'D' shaped rubber rollers on it, these rubber things are your feed rollers, from your angle they should be in a position like a letter 'D' laying on the flat part. You will need to gently rotate the metal rod assy so the arched part of the 'D' shaped rubber roller is facing you, it is spring loaded so you will have to hold it in place with one hand while you clean with the other. Take a white cotton rag and wrap around your index finger and dip into the metho and then use your finger as a scrubbing brush to clean the murk from the roller. If you use a white rag you can tell when the murk has stopped rubbing off, you may have to dip and scrub a few times using a clean part of the rag. The metho will dry very quickly so by the time you lower the machine and reinsert the paper draw you will be able to test straight away.

Hope this has helped.

Regards,

Andrew.

Grinding noise

Hi Anonymous

I trust you are well

If you hear a grinding noise it might be the gear wheel in the printer that is stripped or possibly a paper jam.

Hope this helps

Kind regards

4TH LIGHT FROM THE TOP KEEPS COMING ON LEXMARK E232

What this light sequence means that the printer has a paper jam.

When a paper jam occurs, the printer stops and the operator panel's Paper Jam light and Continue button lights come on. Press and release Continue twice quickly to display the specific secondary error paper jam light sequence.

How to clear Paper Jam

Press Continue button twice quickly to see the secondary error code.

To get the secondary error codes

When the Error light (!) and Continue button lights are both on, a secondary error has occurred.

When the Paper Jam light (4th light) and Continue button lights are both on, a paper jam secondary error has occurred.

Press and release Continue button twice quickly to display the secondary error code light sequence.

Press Continue button to resume printing once all the jammed pages are cleared from the paper path.

We recommend that you clear the entire paper path when a paper jam occurs.

To clear a paper jam:

1 If you are feeding paper from a tray, remove the tray, and then remove any jams.

2 Open the front cover and remove the print cartridge assembly.

NOTE: Do not leave the print cartridge assembly exposed to direct light for an Extended period of time. Extended light exposure can cause print quality problems.

3 Remove any jams in the area behind the print cartridge assembly.

4 Lift the flap at the front of the printer and remove any jams beneath the flap.

5 Open the rear exit and remove any jams.

6 After you have cleared the jams, reinstall the print cartridge assembly, make sure all printer covers and trays are closed, and then press Continue button to resume printing.

NOTE: The printer reprints the pages that caused the paper jam.

Paper feeds about half way and then stops. All of the indicator lights come on.

If you get a paper jam, the Paper Jam indicator light promptsyou to clear the paper path. If the paper has just started to feed from thepaper feeder when the jam occurs, pull the paper straight up out of the paper feeder. Open and close the printer cover toresume printing. If the paper jam occurs inside the printer, remove the paper from the output bin. Turn the printeroff, then on. If this doesn't clear the jam, open the printer cover.Remove the print cartridge and cover it.For additional assistance, please contactLexmark Technical Support

If the orange light is on and remains on does that mean that the toner is out of ink and needs to be replaced?? When you press print it makes noise but won't print anything and then the orange light is on.

Brother MFC-9420CN Paper Jam Error message w/ loud grinding noiz

please try this

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Remove any paper trays. Inspect them for wrinkled or damaged paper.
  3. Also open the back cover of the printer if this model has one.
  4. Open any other doors that give access to the printer's paper path and to the toner or ink cartridge.
  5. If necessary, remove the toner or ink cartridge. Place it away from light/ sun light to avoid damaging it.
  6. If you find a piece of jammed paper, remove it by holding it with both hands and pulling firmly. The goal is to keep the paper from tearing. If several pieces are jammed together, try pulling out the middle piece first to loosen the jam.
  7. If the paper does tear, try rotating the roller gears manually to free the paper. Don't force anything, though. Do this step especially if the jam message comes up repeatedly without any obvious paper jam, there may be a small tear of paper inside.
  8. Ones the printer is free of paper Replace the toner or ink cartridge and paper trays, close any doors you opened and turn the printer back on.
  9. If the printer paper jam message still appears, then there is still some paper in the printer. Reinspect the paper path.
  10. see alternative if the problem is still not solved.

alternative :
Load a piece of thick paper, for example photo paper and press the resume button (may be diffrent button on diffrent models) a few times to the printer picks up the paper and puts it through the machine.

Paper jam

For this and any other print jam problems try this;
Open the scan bed tray and push down the button at the front (scan bed tray open switch)
I found if your print jam occurs and you go through this procedure, the jam clears itself.
With the tray still up and switch held down, try and print something.
See how far the paper goes through the print cycle before jamming. If it jams when it reaches the print head...clean under the print head and try again.

Hope this helps

Stalled printer cartridges

Sounds like an issue with the print carriage. When it's out of alignment and tries to print, it can make awful noises. HP.com has a web page that describes a number of troubleshooting steps when you have print carriage issues:

There's also a related web page having to do with the noise coming from the printer:
