Question about Hitachi 60SDX88B 60" Rear Projection Television

Open Question

60SDX88B burned out resistor #220 will no longer function.

This problem occurred all at once when the television made a pop sound and all of a sudden went black. A smell of smoke followed which I actually noticed was a resistor #220 smoking away. This was on the board on the bottom right most. As resistors aren't usually prone to failure I would assume a capacitor has probably gone upstream. Does anybody know which component I should be looking at replacing? I have photos but Im not sure how to upload them here.

SOURCE: convergence problem

That unit has a convergence repair kit that should fix most problems. Order it directly from Hitachi p/n# X480295. It contains: Rk42 3.3 Ohm 1w Rk46 1.8 Ohm 1w Rk50 3.3 Ohm 1w Rk54 1.8 Ohm 1w Rk58 3.9 Ohm 1w Rk62 2.2 Ohm 1w Ik04 Stk392-150 Ik05 Stk392-150 And I would strongly recommend testing all the resistors in that circuit for change in value. Are you using a good heat sink compound on the STK's when you installed them? That and ordering the japanese knock-offs for STK's are the two most common critical mistakes made. Originally that unit had two STK392-110's for conv. amps. Even Hitachi recommends subbing to a STK392-150 or 180 for greater reliability. You do realize that for the cost you have after two failed attempts you probably could have taken this to a reputable shop and watching the ball games now. :) (no disrespect intended) Good Luck! Bill

SOURCE: need resistor value for RK62 on DP2X board for 57SWX20B

RK62 is a 2.2ohm 1 watt metal oxide resistor hitachi part number 0700054M any 2.2ohm 1 watt resistor will work although it does have to be metal oxide(flame resistant) for safety purposes.

SOURCE: 1.5 ohm resistor rk 46 keeps blowing

You should have put the original OEM STK's in the set - if your set had 110's or 120s put those chips only. Do not risk different chips with different specs/amps/ etc....when you do resistors blow as you have discovered.

Turned on tv no picture only sound then i heard a pop and smelled burning tv turned itself off. 5 min tried turning on tv again nothing happened tv does not turn on at this time

Your RCA TV needs serious troubleshooting. Burning smell is from HV transformer or resistors smoking.

Most likely power supply and/or high voltage circuit or convergence circuit. Many times RCA have multiple or secondary faults that occur with HV or convergence failure.

Repair of RCA HV or convergence usually requires exact manufacturer parts and upgrades or repair in power supply. I would not advise trying this repair without manufacturer support for correct part numbers and service bulletins.

look for trouble in the low voltage and or high voltage power supply circuits. the popping sound could be an exploded safety capacitor in the horizontal output to the flyback transformer. the horizontal output transistor maybe damaged. chances are the low voltage regulator is also damaged.

RCA D56W20 no power

Opps! Your problem is most likely in the power supply section. No doubt a blown fuse, a diode or two and probably a few resistors. To be sure that you found all the problems you will need to check all the components in the power supply. If you know how to use a DMM have at it, safely of course. First unplug it, if you already haven't done so. Check the fuse for continuity. If you are lucky that may be your only problem, but don't count on it. Look for burned components or burn marks on the circuit board. Don't overlook resistors with large values and replace any components which do not test within the proper parameters. When you are sure that you found all the problems don't plug the unit back in to 220 or you will have to do it all again. Get the appropriate sized 220/120 transformer which means one with a current rating higher than the current draw of the TV. That information should be on the data tag on the rear of the unit. Again, remember safety and Good luck.
