Sounds like a electronic or computerized machine with a bad board instead of a mechanical machine.

Shifting the needle

What is the brand and model of your machine? Most machines have the ability to move the needle left and right. However, straight stitch only machines will not since they are not equipped to zig-zag which is a requirement for moving the needle left and right.

Constant problems with tension and the thread breaking from the top threader

check your thread spool for a snag on the plastic. Sometimes thread will catch on that "thread keeper" and once it catches and jerks free, it can cause the spool to spin the other way thus winding the thread on the spool pin.

Another thing to check is to make SURE that when you thread the upper thread that the pressure foot is UP. While you have the pressure foot open, run a piece of unwaxed dental thread through your tension discs.

Also make sure that your needle is large enough for your thread. To test this take another needle of the same size as the one in the machine and clip a piece of thread about 6 inches long. Thread the needle ... grasp the tread by both ends... tip the thread side to side... if the needle doesn't move well, your needle is too small. If it moves well but not too fine.

The upper thread is constantly breaking. What is wrong?

rethread the machine
check the top tension-usually 3 or 4 is good
change the needle & make sure it's inserted correctly (flat side to the back of machine)
some needles & thread do not work togeather--try this

Cut 6-8 inch piece of thread of the spool you are going to use for your project
Take the needle you are going to use for the project
& insert the thread thru the eye of the needle
& lift one end of the thread to a 45 degree angle
& if the needle is the right size for the thread it will slide down the thread
But if the needle hangs on the thread you need one size larger needle for the thread

also make sure the thread tail are 3-6 inches long & pulled behind the needle

The needle is entering the machine far to the left. The needle is in correctly and the bobbin plate has not shifted. It appears that the device holding the needle from above has shifted (it shifts easily...

Is your needle position selector stuck? Try moving the dial back and forth a few times. Have your oiled your machine lately? You manual is available on and is free to download. Good luck

My babylock says THE SAFETY DEVICE HAS BEEN ACTIVATED. The belt is not broke. I have changed the needle and pressure foot and still when you start to sew it does nothing and the above wording comes...

When you get that error message it usally means there is a jam in the machine that is causing the motor to work to hard so it keeps you from burning up the motor try taking your needle plate off and bobbin case out and then put your needle plate back on and then the bobbin case if that doesnt work try looking at the take-up lever there might be thread wraped around it soaking up the oil and causing a bind

Machine will not run

When I have this problem, I turn the knob back and forth (gently) to try to get the needle to release and lift. I get this error message when the needle has shifted (either in the fabric or from using the machine alot at the needle placement shifts).
check your needle, it probably has shifted a bit.
