Alko rotavator drive belt slipping

They are pretty basic, especially if the replacement engine is complete with carburator and exhaust. There should be 4 bolts that hold the engine to the mower, the electrical connectors for the ignition and starter, the throttle cable, & the belt pulley on the crank shaft. If you take good notes and pictures of the old engine before you remove it, just make sure the new engine goes back on the same.

You may type in the Apache Euro 1 on You Tube and see if anything is there for you regarding the machine.

I have seen a number of domestic rotavators but haven't yet seen one with a reverse gear. You didn't make it clear in your description whether yours has a reverse gear and that is all that is working or whether it usually only moves forward but is moving backwards?

While it is theoretically possible for a 2-stroke engine to run backwards, your engine is a 4-stroke that is incapable of running backwards and so it would seem the gear selector is stuck if it has one or someone has carried out repair work and made a mistake or something else is broken.

The only thing that comes to mind is some of the older designs used an over-long drive belt that crossed in the middle like a figure eight in order to reverse the driven pulley and replaced the belt with one that seemed the right size would cause the machine to run backwards.

Check to see if the belt is loose. If so check that the automatic adjuster is not jammed up with grass clippings. The belt may be worn out, especially if it has been slipping for a long while. Note the way it is fitted before you remove it!! Take a photo of it.

Hi, your problem is simple and is all to do with the brake you adjusted. Remove the two bolts, one either side of the brake adjuster, remove the brake assembly, remove clean and lubricate the two pins and the holes they slide in. Reassemble the brake assembly and adjust the centre nut so that the brake comes on and off. This should be about a quarter inch of travel on the short brake lever. Regards Phil.

I had the same problem with my Alko going slow in forward and reverse. Believe it or not the problem is caused by a build up of grass cuttings around the hydro clutch mechanism. If you follow the mechanism from the foot pedal you will probably find the actuator is being prevented from engaging by a build up of old grass. Clean it out and you should find it restores normal operation. This has happened to me a few times so now I blow out the grass on a regular basis with an air compressor which stops me having any problems. It also stops a hefty bill from the service dealer :-)

Check and see how much play you have in the belt the way you have it installed. If you have a lot of play you have the belt the wrong way around the idler. The flat side of belt (outside of belt) goes up against the idler. It might take a couple of tries to get it routed properly but you should be able to get it fairly easily.
