Make sure the cart is connected properly, and check the manufacter's instruction with that cart. sometimes tonearm height and weights need to be adjusted for proper torque and sound.

Fisher mc-715, was working fine until my kid decided to play one of those cardboard records on it, (so he says) now the arm just skips over the whole record.

It will have either knocked out the stylus from it's resting position or broke of the tip.
Here's how to check. Lift up the arm so you can see the underside of the cartridge. The stylus or needle should be seen resting on the cartridge. If it is not there it might have fallen out, but it's more likely from what you describe still there. Next with your finger gently rub the stylus end. It should feel like a sharp point. If it doesn't you will need to replace the stylus. But you might need to do that anyway. All you need is the cartridge number. Put that into google and it should come up with a replacement stylus.

A damaged or worn stylus will effect all records not just one. I don't know what D4 fluid is, but if there was some still present on the record it could have got inside the cartridge and done some damage to it.

I'm trying to figure out what type of cartridge the ATP-2 is which came with my Audio Technica AT-PL120 Turntable. Is it "Moving Magnet" or "Moving Coil" or something else?

These are the specs for your cartridge - it is of the moving magnet variety. Vector-Aligned Dual Magnet design and A-T's exclusive Paratoroidal signal generator. This unique signal-generating system is composed of a unified, laminated coil core wound with a single piece of wire. Internal mechanical and electrical connections are eliminated, minimizing magnetic losses and assuring better signal transfer. PCOCC wire

Cartridge Specifications (ATP-2)

Frequency Response 15-22,000 Hz

Channel Separation 23/17 (dB at 1 kHz/10 kHz)

Vertical Tracking Force 3.0 - 5.0 grams

Stylus Construction Bonded round shank

Output 5.3 mV at 1 kHz, 5 cm/sec

Channel Balance 1.5 dB

Stylus Shape 0.4 x 0.7 mil elliptical
Cantilever Alloy tube

I bought an Audio Technica USB AT LP 120 Turntable last June. It worked fine as a turntable, but I was never able to get good recordings of vinyl without distortion. But now I have another problem: when...

Sorry it could be the cartridge! They can fail at anytime, only the stylus will wear with time. However it could be the amplifer's magnetic cartridge pre-amp. If you look inside your amp and trace back from the phono socket you should find the pre-amp. If it is distorting on both channels it's probably an IC that has failed.

I just set up my audio technica AT-PL120 for the first time, and I can't stop the tonearm from drifting back to the rest. I can't get the stylus to stay straight unless I add more on to the counterweight,...

KEEP THE ANTI SKATE AT 0 FOR NOW,then you need 2 balance the tonearm with the rear counterweight so it just hovers at around the height of the platter.now you need to zero the gauge on the rear counterweight being carefull not to turn the counterweight, then check again that the tonearm still hovers.then screw counterweight inwards untill the dial on counterweight reads between 1.5- 2 grams dependin on tracking weight of cartridge.then adjust antiskate 2 whatever u set the tracking weight to.i would also double check with a spirit level ur level surface

it sounds like your cartridge is shot and damaged.
this turntable has fixed cartridge and only the stylus can be changed.

Arm's Weight

Not by design.

Tracking Force and anti-skate are preset and unfortunately not adjustable in many modern turntables . You want to be cautious with modifying it if only a couple of your records skip.

If you DO decide to try modifying it consder that the tracking force is in the probable range of 2-4 grams. In the old prehistoric days before T'Ts had adustable tracking and antiskate we would place a dime or penny on top of the cartridge shell to assert the stylus into the groove. THAT is a bad idea unless excessive record and stylus wear is unimportant to you.

Is there anything that might contribute to skipping (not level, scratches, warps, environmental vibrations, loud speakers nearby)?
