in some cases certain manufacturers say in the instructions that when using s video with seperate audio, you cannot use the HDMI for the sound and sometimes visa versa, it's just the way the output is set up. Remove the other sound cable you are using for pc or tv and just use HDMI to confirm that the sound is re-enabled on the HDMI

You probably need to reset the output settings. This may happen if you've used your PS3 on a regular TV with an RCA connector.
To reset your PS3's video/audio settings, turn off the PS3, then hold down the power button until it beeps a second time.
