I have a 2002 whirlpool fridge and a 2006 whirpool fridge, are the defrost controllers inter changeable?

Defrost controls are always being updated and I don't recommend using one from an older model. I really don't know if they will work and would be affraid to try if it were me. Thanks Sea Breeze
What are the model numbers?

We recently purchased a used side by side Whirpool fridge, model number ED56TNXMQ. It worked great for a few months but now the refrigerator side has stopped cooling. The freezer is still working but...

There is no simple solution. You can get it to work for a while, if you defrost the freezer to clear the ice out, but the bottom line is that something in your defrost circuit is not working correctly. And you will need to test the circuit to find out what isn't working correctly. Here are some links on how to test the different components of your defrost system:

The defrost heater is easy to check with a ohm meter. If you have continuity, then it is good. is instructions on how to test the timer. is instruction on how to test the defrost thermostat.

Hope this helps solve the problem.

Our whirpool refirgerator and freezer arent getting cold despite putting controls on highet setting?

Is there frost in the freezer? If so defrost it completely. I mean completely because most of the the ice that is built up is inside the freezer wall and blocking the air flow through the evaporator. Setting it to max when it has frost already only makes it worse as it is. So go ahead and defrost it completely then set the temperature to about midway only.

Cooling side of fridge not cooling

if the compressor is running your ref. should be getting cold. Their is a defrost timer but when it is in defrost the compressor shuts off. I think you do have a leak.

Refrig. section not getting down to proper temp.

Hi Ron,
That was excellent description of the problem! Nice diagnosis, too!

The Adaptive Defrost Control board is located in the control section. It's part # is 4388932. I made this little diagram for you to assist you in gaining access to it.

Let me know, if you have any trouble, OK? Otherwise, don't forget to rate this solution and thanks for using FixYa!

Freezer ok(Whirpool -6 yrs old), but the fridge is not cooling sufficiently, only around 50 degrees. A lot of frost build up in the freezer. Have to thaw it every couple of days.

defrost system not working. take back panel off inside freezer.
check continuity thro the defrost element and stats mounted on the pipework
if all ok then points to a fault with timer or module
