Question about Maytag Refrigerators

Open Question

Condensate drain Hi, We have a 655L GS2126PAD side by side. After a power failure for 2 days there is a foul smell coming from the rear of the unit and after cleaning out the condensation tray which contained foul smelling water (have done this twice) the smell disappears but greets us again in the morning. Have cleaned out coils and condenser fan also. Fridge/freezer working ok except for smell. Any suggestions please?

Sounds like the overload, Start Relay 67006453 is defective.

I am having trouble finding thesae parts in stock so you may need to get some local help. I noticed that your model has 220 volts ac what country are you located? I recommend that you also do a compressor windings test as below to insure that the compressor is worth buying the start relay components. Unplug the refrigerator and remove the back panel that covers the compressor. There should be 3 wires going inside the cover of the compressor. Mark all 3 and mark their location so if compressor is OK you can put them back in same order. The plastic cover may snap on and you may need to squeeze the sides to unlock the cover and sometimes there is a metal clip holding the cover in place. Remove the cover. May look hard but it's simple. There will be three connections under the cover and 2 will go through the start relay. Unplug them leaving the three prongs exposed. They may be marked R =Run, S=Start and C=Common. Set your meter on continuity and then begin by testing 2 at a time until you have checked S to R and R to C an C to S and S to R again. You should get a reading all the way around. If no reading between any of the pairs as you go around you should get no reading between any two the compressor has an open winding and is defective. Then if it passes that test then touch one probe to R and the other to the copper pipes or clean metal on outside of compressor, then S to metal outside and C to metal outside. If you get a reading this way even just a little. The compressor is a burnout. Then let me know what you find. Thanks, Sea Breeze

Litters of water accumulating in the foot well of the rear passenger side seats which can soak your feet. There is dampness in front and other side. We have no idea of where this water is coming in from....

Depends on where the water is coming from. The 2 most often causes of water buildup is either the heater core is leaking or the AC condensate drain tube is blocked. If the heater core was leaking, you'd smell antifreeze or see steam coming from the vents while driving. The AC condensate drain tube lets condensation water to drip overboard from the housing. This tube is on the bottom of the AC case on the firewall side under the hood. Sometimes you need only pinch it to open it to drain out the water buildup..

Does air cnditioner give any foul smell when running

Hello typically a air conditioner does not give off a foul smell, sometimes the condensate that drains out can have a moldy kind of smell or if mold is growing inside the unit it can give off a foul smell called " dirty sock syndrome". The last possibilty is that if the condensate line is drained to a floor drain and on the negative pressure side of the evaporator coil it could be pulling the sewer gas up thru the line, in this case the condensate line must be trapped to prevent this. Also, I would recommend pouring some bleach into the condensate line every few monthes.

I have a Whirlpool refrigerator 21TFA that may have a drain problem or a clog. It drains in the evening, but this morning when I woke up, it smelled bad from the bottom of the refrigerator. Any advice?

Hi and Welcome to FixYa I am Kelly,
A bad smell from under the refrigerator is a result of either a dead rodent or.. dirt and lint accumulation in the plastic drip pan / catch basin and then the defrost cycle water wets it 2 to 3 times a day intensifying the smell.

Unplug the unit
Remove the rear fiberboard cover that covers the compressor area
Use a shop vac and rags to clean out the drip pan / catch basin. (These can be VERY foul if they have never been cleaned!) Make sure to clean the condenser coils and condenser fan area also. Inspect for varmits / rodents (deceased) with a flashlight. You can wash the drip pan using a rag with vinegar and water then soap and water.
Lastly... make sure the END of the drain tube that terminates in the drip pan is clean. If there was lint build up that caused a muck pool in your drip pan the muck often clogs the end of the drain line.
You never know what your going to find under a refrigerator! I could expound but it is not pleasant and only you will be able to discover the secrets of your refrigerators' "underside life." All I will say is.. it is always a... revealing experience.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

Kenmore 580.75151500 A/C unit smells... We've had this window unit in place for 2 years. We've cleaned the front filter and coil, but we're still getting different, peculiar smells from the A/C. Sometimes...

Hi!!

As you know, the evaporator unit (the one that the filter covers) gets a lot of condensation which is drained thru the back (outside) of the unit. That's why the unit is installed a bit tilted to the back.

The factory drain hole is too small and gets plugged up easy, some units don't even have one, the water sits for long periods of time. bacteria grows and the smell starts.

Unplugg unit from electrical outlet.

Make sure the unit is tilted back a little.

Drill two 1/4" inch drain holes in the same back bottom corner and set a bucket to collect the dirty water that will come out while cleaning it.

Get a quart of air conditioning grill cleaner (the ecol-friendly, it is purple in color) mix it on a spray bottle with water on a 1:1 ratio.

Use masking tape and some plastic to cover electrical controls in front of unit.

Following application instruccions on bottle, carefully spray on evaporator and condenser, avoiding electrical controls. Rinse with pure water, 2 qts. minimum on each grill, let it drain for about one hour.

Uncover controls and connect unit to power outlet.

Run the fan-only for about 10 min. and then the compressor.

There are more professional ways to service the unit, but performing this simple steps will keep your unit in good shape.

Don't forget to rate this post!! Good Luck!!

GE side by side refrigerator smells on the outside!

Mix 1/3 cup of bleach and 2/3 cup of water , and pour down drain tube (rear bottom in freezer section . Too much bleach and the smell of bleach would be circulated by the fan to the room , so be sure to add water .

Same problem as above on my side by side refrigerator, same age.

The fact is you need to remove the rear panel inside the freezer. The fan is behind that panel. Please read all you can at the 2 links posted below. The clorox will be used to help stop the smell in the condensate lines and pan near compressor. Every smell is carried through the evaporator condensate line to be returned to the air inside your home.

Window AC - foul smell

if the unit is cleaned and this smell is only when the condenser is on means the fresh air is open and this smell comes from outside . because the condenser fan is sucking air from condenser through it to motor side .

Odor coming from back of fridge

This is very unusual, most of the time when I get complaints about odor it's form the inside of the cabinet. This should be easy enough to solve though. The odor is likely from dust accumulated underneath, or from something in the drain pan. If the unit has visible fiberglass insulation underneath you should replace it with new because, even if the source of the odor has been removed, the insulation can still contain it.
Unplug the refrigerator, take off the kick plate and rear cover. Clean and vacuum the entire under- carriage, condenser, fan, and condensation evaporator tray.
Be gentle with the components though, especially the capillary tube ( a pipe about the size of a 14 gauge copper wire )

Foul odor

Yes ,there is a condensate drain pan in the compressor compartment under your unit.
You should be able to get to it from the rear of the unit, by remove several screws.

Use caution and unplug unit before attempting any repair.
The pan can be cleaned out with warm soapy water.
