If it's on the column undo the screws holding the cowling on,you may have to remove the steering wheel ,mark the shaft to wheel so it goes back in the same spot, disconnect air bag fuse if it has one disconnect the plug for wiring then you should be able to see the mount screws to the column.

Headlights wont come on but all other lights do

Dimmer switch is on the floor, right? remove dimmer switch and replace with new one. Probably all rusted and corroded inside, you may have blow the brake switch when you hit the dimmer, also check the wiring to both the dimmer and the brake switches.

Lightolier 3 way remote wiring

If you have determined the wiring to be correct, then yes, the remote is probably defective..

According to Lightolier literature, your Lightolier OS600 is called a "strap dimmer". Having 540W on a 600w rated switch is pretty close to the limit (90%) of the switch, and will cause the switch to fail sooner than say a 300w load. The 600w rating of the switch applies only if all the heating sink fins are in place. Often times, when installing in a box with another switch or dimmer, fins must be removed to allow the switch to physically fit. If any fins are removed, the rating of the switch is reduced. Page 30 of the manual shows that a 600w strap dimmer that has a single fine removed is reduced to a 500w capacity dimmer, and if both fins are removed, it is reduced to a 400w dimmer. You may find that you will need a 1000w dimmer to reliably gain control of your 540w load, as it will control 600w even with both fins removed. This derating is required due to the heat created by the dimmer. Heat is a killer for electronics, and solid state dimmers are no exception.

Check out page 32 of that manual. On it, are wiring diagrams for dimmers and switches. I believe your is figure "G" that shows the 120v "hot" (black) connected to the black wire of ALL switches, the yellow wires of ALL the switches are connected together, but are not connected to anything else, the 120v neutral (white) connects to the MASTER white wire AND light fixture white wire and finally, the MASTER red wire connects to the light fixture black wire.

It is also important to note that these switches are for standard tungsten incandescent and quartz halogen lamps ONLY. They are NOT suitable for CFL, Fluorescent or other types frequently found in commercial / industrial buildings such as neon or other gas lamps such as Metal Halide, Mercury Vapor, High Pressure Sodium, etc.

I hope this helps & good luck!

1998 buick century only high beams and turn signals work. No headlights. I have checked breakers, relays, fuses, power at headlight switch, power at headlight harness, all are good.

The Buick Century is equipped with a multi-switch. This switch is an all in one switch that controls your cruise control, windshield wipers and turn signals in one switch. This switch also controls dimming and brightening of your headlights. The dimmer switch is simple to replace, and all you need is a phillips head screwdriver to complete the task.

  1. Removing the Steering Column Shroud
    • Removing the dimmer switch starts at the steering column. To plan this task out, access the steering column by removing the screws holding the steering column shroud in place. This will expose the turn signal lever. Remove the lever by twisting it forward, and pulling it out of the switch.
    Removing the Dimmer Switch
    • The switch is held on by two screws and a wiring harness. The wiring harness can be removed by prying up on the locking tabs and pulling the connector out of the socket. The two screws can be removed with a phillips head screwdriver. The switch will slide out. To install a dimmer switch, be sure to repeat these steps in reverse order.

Can not connect new dimmer.

I think you are removing a 3-way dimmer. Is there another on-off switch that also turns the dimmed light on and off? You will need to replace it with another 3-way dimmer. Here is a link to an excellent how-to write-up.

How to dissable a pre-existing dimmer switch

You don't want to disassemble the dimmer ... you want to remove the dimmer and replace it with a toggle switch

Get a switch at the hardware store or at the big box place. You only need a standard wall toggle switch - color to suit your taste ... gray, ivory, white, brown or red usually. Expect to pay less than $3.00 and maybe as little as 75 cents.

It is simple ...

turn off the power to the light at your circuit panel.

Remove the knob (pull it off) - remove two little screws that hold the cover plate on. There may be a nut under the knob ... remove it (leftie - loosie -- righty - tighty)

Remove the two screws that hold the dimmer in the box,

Pull the dimmer out.

loosen the screws that hold the wires onto the dimmer ... you may have wire nuts holding the wires together. if so, remove them

set the dimmer aside.

you should be working with two black wires in the wall. What ever is attached to the dimmer is the wires you will be using. It does not make any difference which colored wire goes on which brass screw - more below - except the green ... the green goes only on the ground screw.

put one wire from the wall on one brass screw

put the other wire from the wall on the other brass screw.

put the bare wire (or green wire) on the green screw on the switch frame.

arrange the wires behind the switch and screw two screws into the wall box ... make sure the switch is straight.

put the cover on -- two screws ...

turn on the power.

I need a pull chain DIMMER switch for my fan light. Only one set of wires supplies the fan and light. Surely SOMEBODY has a pull chain dimmer ??? Thanks. Bill

Bought three fans for the bedrooms, all hunters with pull chain dimmers. Less than one year and two of the three dimmers are shot. Can't find a replacement so I bypassed it. Remove light assembly and unplug 9pin connector. Remove black vented dimmer assembly by removing wire nuts and disconnecting the 2wire connector(black and white wires). Cut the 2wire connector off and save it in case you find a part someday. Wire nut black to black(hot) and white to white(neutral). You will disable the pull chain by wire nutting those two wires together.

High beam dimmer switch on a 1989 Cadillac Seville

Could be a couple of things. One would be that the dimmer switch has over time come loose and is now out of adjustment. Or the plastic piece in the column that pushes the rod that goes to the switch has broke. Or the switch is bad.

Need to see diagrams of the figs. 3-6 from a Chilton's manual...

My son came down and figured it out for me. Not sure what all he did but he had to make a few modifications by splicing the wires together after cutting the wires just under the dimmer switch...then a few adjustments were needed to get it to all work right.
Thanks
