SOURCE: defrost not working

Remove the rear panel on the freezer wall. Advance the timer to see if the defrost heater comes on. If the heater does not come on, locate the defrost thermostat which clips onto the coil near the top of the coil. It has two wires going to it. Unplug the frig and cut the wires from the defrost thermostat and join them together and plug the frig back in. Observe to see if the defrost heater comes on. If the heater comes on now, replace the defrost heater.

Machine is making a solid sheet/block of ice on the evaporator plate and no cubes are dropping. The sheet just keeps freezing larger and larger. Any trouble shooting to perform? Top off The R404a?

your evaporator should not be covered with thick slab of ice. If it is, the ice serves as an insulator and the freezer temps will not go down to the required 10 degrees or so for the icemaker to operate properly. if ice is forming on the evaporator then the self defrost cycle is fubar - check the defrost timer and/or heat element for operation.

Charging refrigerator is not recommended since the amount of refrigerant is extremely critical for correct operation- not like an AC unit.. Check all else before low refrigerant can be blamed.

This is a very common problem with Samsung refrigerators especially the type that has two evaporators. The evaporator that is inside the fresh food section and will usally give people the most problems. The drain below the evaporator in the fresh food section will begin to freeze over or become blocked by gunk inside the drain line. When this happens it causes the fresh food section to retain water because with the drain blocked the moisture and defrost condensate water now have nowhere to go. Once that drain is blocked the freezing over of the evaporator will begin to happen more often slowing down defrost which again make problems worse. Clean the drain, make sure the refrigerator is level and confirm the model number of your refrigerator. Your model has no defrost timer and defrost are determined by the motherboard. There is a way to force defrost with your model from the motherboard but until the drain is cleaned out defrost will not help much because the water has no where to go but to freeze over the evaporator and fan area of the fresh food section evaporator. Kenmore side by side freezes up about every two weeks. I replaced thermostat and was told that I need a timer. What is a timer and is that what I need?

A DEFORST TIMER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DEFROSTING THE EVAPORATOR .THIS PROCESS TAKES PLACE EVERY 7 TO 8 HOURS..THERE IS A HEATING ELEMENT THAT IS PLACED BESIDE THE EVAPORATOR THE DEFROST TIMER CAUSES THE HEATING ELEMENT TO BECOME RED HOT AND IT IS THIS HEAT THAT MELTS THE FROST IN THE FREEZER COMPARTMENT.

The top half of the evaporator is freezing and both sides are not cooling enough

The first thing you want to do is open the freezer and see if the fan inside there is running. The reason is the freezer cools the refrigerator side by circulating air from the freezer. If the fan is running then your problem is one or more parts of the defrost system is malfunctioned and in return your problem arises. There are three parts to the system, the defrost timer or in some cases control board, defrost thermostat also known as a bi-metal, and the defrost heater. The defrost system is set up to operate as so. The defrost timer or control board will turn the machine off, in some cases every 8 hours, some 12. During this time period the defrost heaters, located behind the freezer wall and rest underneath the evaporator, yet wires to them run up the side of it, are energized and emit heat that raises upward to melt the ice that has formed on the evaporator coils. The bi-metal or defrost thermostat is at the top of the evaporator. When the heat from the heater starts to reach the bi-metal, it breaks the circuit turning the heater off. The whole purpose of this is because the freezer cool the refridgerator side by drawing air across the coils and blowing to the other side via the evap fan motor. In my opinion, if you change one part of the defrost system change them all because usually when one part fails another will follow, so save yourself the time and the food loss, the cost difference is minute.

Whirlpool Model # ETClCHMXK009... Freezer is freezing but refrigerator is not cooling well...

Hi

If refrigerator is not cooling properly it can be due to a defrost timer, which is causing the fridge to go into defrost cycle. Usually it takes 45-60 minutes for refrigerator to come out of defrost cycle. If the timer is bad then it will not come out of defrost cycle and can result in this kind of issues. It can also occur due to defrost thermostat, it allows current to pass through it at temperatures of 20 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit and prevents current from passing through it at 40 to 60 degrees. This is difficult to test, though, because it takes a prolonged, very-cold temperature to turn it on. The defrost thermostat is snapped onto the top portion of the evaporator. The thermostat sends temperature information to the processor. The defrost heater must be replaced when replacing the thermostat.
1. Remove the lower fan duct work from the evaporator cover.
2. Remove the 1/4-in. evaporator cover screws and remove the evaporator cover.
3. Disconnect the defrost thermostat wiring connector.
4. Remove the defrost thermostat from the evaporator.

Hope this helps...please post back for further assistance.

Samsung fridge rs52530bwp the fridge side will not work

I have a similar situation before in your case if your heating element is working then you are lucky I had a samsung fridge and the defrost heating element was bad and i was forced to install a different one because i would have to change the hole evaporator in order to replace the heating element so what dit was to use a mechanical 10 hour defrost timer and install a generic heating element and a defrost thermostat on serial so it want work on less the evaporator has froze over i drill a hole to the back of the fridge and i wren the cables to the back of the fridge cover then whit foil tape an take power directly from the power cord i install the timer next to the control board so every 10 hours will give power to the heating element but will not come on unless the evaporator has froze up. on my case i had to do it like that because the heating element i use was to strong for the control board and would just burn it up. but will work even better using the original heating element. NOTE: find the diagram of a old fridge that will help you to figure out how to install the timer and the defrost thermostat no need for the timer to cut off the compressor keep in mind than the defrost thermostat only close the circuit when is chill below freezing so i recommend to use a new one I hope this help you
