Question about Tappan Kitchen Ranges
I have a Tappan electric oven. When the oven is turned on, a neon lamp light on the control panel turns on with the oven heating element. Recently, I have noticed that when the oven is turned off, the neon panel lamp does not extinguish completely. It dims about 90% and flickers slightly. Nevertheless, the heating element is completely cold. Is this characteristic of a neon lamp failure, or is something else wrong?

SOURCE: Oven does not light
even if the ingitor glows, and the oven wont lite, the odds are that the ingitor is bad. it must draw 3.2 amps to open the gas valve. the only way to test the ignitor is with an amp probe. replacing the ingnitor is about 90% a sure thing.

It is very common for elements to "catch fire" when they fail. It is really electical arching. But to answer your question you shouldnt be concerned if it ever happens to the bottom element immediatly kill the breaker it will stop instantly. dont use a fire extinguisher as it wont stop the arching. And most ovens do use the upper broil element for baking for very short intervals like 10secs on every minute or so to brown the top of product. Some models (especially older builder line ) do not

you have a thermal fuse open it is called a "T.O.D" it is located on the back of the unit or up in the top. the self clean very often pops these especially on the whirlpool units made 4-5 years ago very cheap part like $20 you can find it with the wiring diagram easy fix good luck

You need to check the connection at the back of the unit that hooks to the house power. Turn off breakers or pull fuses before checking. It sounds like you only have half of the voltage you need. One of the wire connectors may be burnt or you may have a problem with the house wiring.
