SOURCE: How to remove the washer cycle selection/start-stop knob on a Whilpool Heavy Duty Thin Twin stacked washer dryer

I believe the selector knob on a Whirpool just has to be turned counter-clockwise with the selector pushed in. It will spin off the shaft and then the outer indicator dial will pull off. The shaft also has a keyed slot that will only allow the dial to be removed and installed one way, so there should be no question as to how it goes back on.

Was there a reason as to why you are removing the washer selector knob? If this is a simple matter of replacing a broken water temperature selector, you shouldn't have to remove any of the control knobs to gain access to the selector. The entire front panel comes off by removing the screws holding it in place. That way you can access the broken selector from behind the front panel much easier. Just remove the panel right above the washer top (under the dryer) and it should expose the front panel mounting screws. Remove these screws and the front panel comes off. Just make sure the unit is unplugged before you begin. I hope this helps you. Let me know if you need further assistance.

Tip

How to disassemble a washing machine

The washer cabinet usually must be disassembled for repairs and some maintenance. The washer is connected to both the electric power outlet and to the water supply. Make sure the power cord and water hoses are disconnected before you disassemble the cabinet or tip it over for service. To disassemble a washer:
-To remove the control panel, remove retaining screws spaced around the panel. They are usually located under a piece of molding or trim that can be pried off. On some machines, you'll have to remove the back of the control panel, also held by retaining screws, to get at the working parts of the controls. Knobs on the control panel are usually friction-fit and will pull off. Some knobs are held by small setscrews at the base of the knob. Loosen the setscrews with a screwdriver or Allen wrench and pull the knobs straight off the shafts.

- To remove the service panel, remove its retaining screws, then spread an old blanket on the floor to protect the washer's finish. Make sure the machine and hoses are drained of water. Tip the washer over on its front or side to gain access through the bottom of the machine. The bottom of the machine generally doesn't have a service panel because it is usually open.

- To remove the top of the cabinet, insert a stiff-bladed putty knife into the joint between the top and side panels and give the knife a rap with your fist. This should release the spring clips so that the top can be removed.

The set knob on my kenmore 70 series top load washer is stripped and I can't figure out how to remove it. The knob just spins and will not move inner set arrow to proper load cycle

flip up the controls

The timer has a hollow shaft. The tip of the shaft has
ears on it. To keep the knob on there a small rod is shoved up into the hollow shaft. The rod spreads the tip and retains the knob. To remove the knob pull out the rod a half inch and the knob and skirt is easily removed.

How do you access the control panel the knob that sets the wash cycles is broken and needs replaced

The topside control panel has four small torx screws that hold the control panel to the rear. The timer has a small U clip under the knob that needs to be removed with needle nose and then the knob comes off so the timer can be replaced. I have your washer's training manual HERE
