GE Profile bottom freezer erratic.

GE Profile Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator with Electronic controls with digital temperature readout (Should include Models PDS20MFS, PDS20SFS, PDS22MFS, PDS22SFS, PDS22MFS) May also apply to other models.

Diagnosis: Search of Internet yielded no definitive fix. It appeared to me that the some minor frost buildup might be symptomatic of unseen frost elsewhere. The electronic controls could possibly be messed up.

Fix: Not knowing whether it was frost or the electronic controls (or both), did the following:

1. Turned off the refrigerator. (It is not clear how to do that. Download the owner's manual for your model from the Internet. If it is like mine, the freezer and refrigerator APPEAR to have separate controls. In fact they are linked. To turn both freezer and refrigerator off, press the WARMER button on EITHER the refrigerator OR freezer until the display shows OFF for both the freezer and refrigerator.)

2. Unplugged the unit. Let it set for 18 hours with both doors open.

3. Plugged it in (which may have reset the electronic controls.)

4. Turned it on. To do so, I followed the instructions that said to press the COLDER button on either the refrigerator or freezer. Press the same COLDER button a second time and it should go to the factory presets of 0 degrees for the freezer and 37 degrees for the refrigerator.

5. Allowed the temperatures to stabilize for a week, after which temperature adjustments can be made.

Either the start relay and start capacitor or the Adaptive Defrost control is burned out. If you have a voltage meter we can test a few things like the compressor and the capasitor. The part number for the Adaptive defrost is 241508001 and found inside the fresh food compartment behind the control panel. I can help you locate the problem if you like. Let me know, Thanks, Sea Breeze

GE profile bottom freezer model # PGSS5NFXA SS. Got up this morning and freezer thawing. Pulled back panel cleaned the condenser fins with compressed air andchecked the connections. runs fine but can'

I had this happen with my fridge when the door was open for awhile when I was cleaning the inside. I did what you did, clean everything behind it. Pay particular attention to the circuit boards, there may be reset buttons in that area. Then unplug the freezer for 10 minutes (make sure it's for a FULL 10 minutes) then plug it back in and try it.

Refrigerator stopped cooling

the problem is in your freezer !
open the back wall of your freezer and check if the fan working then if you see a big build up of ice. then its your heater unit or your heater thermostat. to check that it is the problem unplug the unit defrost the freezer coil with hair drier gently and when it done plug it again and see if your fridg get cool (1h or 2) then you know its the heater unit or the thermostat :(

GE Profile PFSF5NJW French door Bottom freezer. Freezer is fine. Refrigerator at 60 degrees. Unplugged for two days to thaw any possible freeze up. Refrige still at 60 degrees.

If that is what happened after plugging back in still no change in temperature I recommend you call someone you can trust. Trust is about asking too much these days. You refrigerator does not need to run at all until I or someone can find the problem. If someone there would like the challenge and knows how to use a multi-meter let me know. Thanks, Sea Breeze

Yes, what you are asking is possible. It is also possible that the compressor motor has a flat spot or is even siezing up when hot. If you are comfortable changing the cap. then I would do that first a see what happens. Changing the compressor will be much more costly and maybe more than you want to put into you refrigerator.

Back wall freezes up on freezer side while fridge side is too warm. fridge temperature stays between 60 to 70 degrees

Is the freezer fan working ? If not , control board probably bad . Pull refrig out from wall and remove power . Remove the 8" X 10" panel and you will see the main control board . Remove the blue plug with 3 larger wires . The sequence is : wire1 , wire2 , space , wire3 . Using a short piece of wire with both ends stripped about 1/4 " , insert the wire into wire2 and wire3 . Plug refrig back in . Look in the freezer at the bottom rear for a red glow ( may take a minute or so ) . If you see a red glow , the main control board is bad ( the board you unplugged the wires from ) . If no red glow , then disconnect power to fridge , remove the jumper , and reinstall the blue plug and the panel .
Remove the food from the freezer section and remove the rear freezer panel inside the freezer . There you will see a round 1 " disk , clipped on top of the coils .Pt # WR60X10068 Defrost thermostat . At the bottom of the coils , you will see a heater . Pt # WR51X10042 Defrost heater . Replace both of these as the heater gets hot , and cuts off by the bimetal . he heater only has a screw on each side attaching it to the coils , and the bimetal just clips on . Easily repairable .

Hi, Is the evaporator fan motor running in the freezer? Was the fridge setting any length of time unplugged before you got it?

Freezer works refrigerator doesn't

Try finding the defrost timer and slowly click by click turn it just until the compressor stops. let it finish the defrost cycle. Let it run for about 3 hours then do it again. Sometimes if the frost builds up too much the defrost system can't handle it. If you can't find the timer, take out the food, unplug it and leave the doors open for at least 24 hours. Then plug it back in. It can take up to 10 hours to cool down completely. Use a thermometer. you should be around 38 degrees in the fridge and between 0 and 10 degrees in the freezer.
