Question about Promise Ultra133 TX2 ATA Controller

1 Answer

Using promise tx2 ultra133 ata/133 controller for raid (performance)

I have 4 hdd's 3 of which are identical and 2 80 wire ribbons(the product came with 1),.the manual only describes setting up with 1 hdd,.so my problem is how do i set up this controller/hdd's for striped raid or striped raid with backup?,.i dont mind going without backup if need be as my issue is pure performance,.i should also add all these hdd's are 40 gb @ 7,200 rpm,any help or instruction would be greatly appreciated as i seem unable to find a detailed article on the web, thank you.

thanks davey.that does look like the card, and looking at that data sheet,.it says it will support 2 drives on each port,.this setup wasnt a technical need so to speak,i just happened to get this bundle when i picked up an older motherboard/cpu which runs fine without raid,.kind of an experiment with raid,.so that explains why even when both set to master, installing windows afterwards,it still picks up as 2 drives,(first try was 2 hdd's as i wasnt sure about master/slave settings for more drives) so,bottom line is i'm still interested in hardware raid and your suggestions would be appreciated, this is about learning for me,.not money, thanks again.

Well, first of all, the card only supports 2 drives from what I see... and secondly, the card doesn't do RAID either. This is the spec sheet that I made the determination from... http://www.promise.com/marketing/datasheet/file/Ultra133tx2DS_v3.pdf. If I'm mistaken about what the device is, please provide more information about the card that you have. If I have the correct card, then unfortunately you'll have to get another card. If you'll tell me what your technical requirements and financial restrictions are, maybe I can give you some advice on what to purchase.

Old thread, but I hate people being misinformed. That card DOES support 4 drives, one Master/Slave pair on each cable.
XP and above can handle the RAID part if you're going JBOD or Striped.
If you want backup like RAID5, you can hack XP to do RAID5, but it's SLOOOWWWW.
The card itself doesn't do raid control on it's own.

64 bit driver promise ultra

There is no official Window 7 driver for the Promise Technology Ultra 133 TX2, but you can use the Vista driver. It should also work for both the Ultra 66 and the Ultra 100 cards.
I found the Vista driver at:
http://www.promise.com/single_page_session/page.aspx?region=en-US&m=722&sub_m=sub_m_9&rsn=144
The file name is: Ultra133 TX2 windows 2.1.0.3 logo driver.rar
This file is compressed in the rar format. I decompressed it using 7-Zip. Folder amd64 contains the 64 bit driver. The amd64 driver worked even though my mother board has an Intel CPU and chip set.

1) Flash the BIOS to the latest one. It's here.

2) Use this driver which is the newest one. Here.

This should fix your issue.

Conflict between Promise Ultra133 and SATA RAID controller

Check that your RAID controller and onboard SATA controller aren't in a compatibility mode. You can put them in this mode while you have no SATA driver installed in Windows.

This tricks Windows into seeing the SATA drives as regular IDE drives. Your BIOS then has a spasm when it see's another IDE controller there, and just uses the card instead.

Make sure the SATA drivers are installed first, otherwise anything SATA will stop showing up. (and your Windows just won't boot if it's on a SATA disk and you take compatibility mode off) =-]

Installing a 2 port ATA-133 IDE adapter card to a desktop w/a hard drive & DVD

I don't think you can boot off of the ATA-133 so you will have to boot off of the IDE on the mobo and have the DVD drive jumpered cable select on the 2nd IDE. Boot that way to make sure the system boots. Shut down. Then instll the ATA-133 adapter with NO DRIVES on it and boot. The system should ask you for drivers for the new hardware. Intall the drivers. Shut down. Attach the new drives to the ATA-133. Reboot. You still might have to go into admin in windows and assign drive letters to the new drives. Anyway, if you are trying to boot off of a drive on the ATA-133 adapter, I don't think you can do it. I have mostly used Asus boards with Award Bios and there was no way to point the boot process to an add-on ATA Controller.
