Attached lg cd/rw external drive to install win98 but win98 boot floppy doesn't see a cd drive.help
I need help i have a panasonic cf-27 toughbook with a usb cd drive and usb floppy drive ive tried both seperate and with a multi usb connector to boot both but it doesnt find them can anyone help me?
I would like the boot disk or boot files to enable the use of a PCMIA CD-ROM in DOS so that I can install a better operating system than the Windows 98 that is present on this Panasonic CF 27EB with a Pentium II 300 mhz with 320 mb RAM. If I get a Sony CD-51A with the install disk will the DOS drivers be on it? Second question: If I just upgrade to Windows ME, would it install from my external USB CD-ROM or would I have to have a bootable CD-ROM drive?
In your previous post, you said, "I use the Sony CD-51A myself and can provide a suitable boot disk for the asking, and further directions should you use this route." I have a Sony Vaio PCGA-CD51/A that I bought on ebay to use with my Panasonic Toughbook CF-27EB because I want to upgrade the operating system from Windows 98SE to XP or whatever. I've downloaded lots of drivers for the Sony PCGA-CD51/A but can get nowhere. The specifications in the downloads don't match my CD-Rom. It does power up and the plug & play detects it as a Ninja ATA or something, but it can't find the drivers and won't work. I would just love to have your dos boot disk if you are still available and can help me get this working.

No CD drive on the tough book CF-27. there is a floppy drive and a USB; i tried the USB with no luck; I also tried to down load the contents of the BIOS CD to floppy disks but this failed toor; does anyone have another idea?
Using the wakepup linux boot disk i have been able to acess a flash drive from the usb port if u are trying to install win98 (it is a good start) use the puppy linux boot disk the flash drive will be d:/ just coppy the cd to the drive then download xxcopy16 and put it on a floppy copy this to your hdd and then use c:/xxcopy16 d: c: /s this will copy all of the flash to your hdd the win 98 instaler i think can be ran in dos so the following command will be setup hope it works for you lol
Late on the scene I know, but perhaps you still have the problem. I must assume that your CF-27 has the FDD fitted and is w/o the CD-Rom. Whichever solution you use you will have to invest in some hardware. A PCMCIA CD-Rom is a useful piece of kit which, with appropriate Dos drivers on the boot disk will enable the CD-Rom in Dos. From there you will have to initiate the Windows disk manually. I use the Sony CD-51A myself and can provide a suitable boot disk for the asking, and further directions should you use this route. I frequently have to install the O/S on laptops and tablets without their own CD-Roms and the Sony earns its keep. Once into Windows of course and any external unit is a possibility.
You need to access the bios, and set the boot order properly.
What kind of external cd drive is it? If it's usb, I've never had any luck getting the system to actually load off of one. The CF-27 came with a pcmcia optical drive, which works pretty well.
I've got a couple of cf-27 cd roms which take the same slot as the floppy. Loaded XP on one of ours.
Good luck.

Absolutely ignorant; bought a CF-27, wanna install LINUX, no floppy, no CD drive, just external CD rom, or flash drive, how may I change de boot order at the bios ? ( phoenix V2-10L13B) , in case of need a BIOS update, listen suggestion...no idea how to do it.
Thanks a lot for your time.
