Question about Computers & Internet

I have a program(taskhost.exe) which I can't close, and is preventing me from logging off, or shut down my PC

When I try to log off my PC, I get message, to close program still running, stopping me from logging off. Also, quite often, I get website not responding, will troubleshoot problem. Then it comes back, that program is not responding because of a long running script, and do I want to stop it. Yes I do, and the web site that was not responding starts working. But the program, taskhost.exe shows up again, and running, I have found program in task manager, but afraid to try and close it, because I don't understand the lingo explaining its existence, so don't how important it is.

Taskhost.exe is part of windows. killing shouldn't affect anything critical. It's function is to run script that need to run at certaint times. low priority stuff. Recomend you run antivirus and anti malware software. also run windows update. those 3 things tend to find the majority of issues. then open your control panel and look through the add programs section and see if anything has been installed that you don't want. Many time programs install other programs that will cause your computer to have issues.

Hi, i am having a problem trying to remoove yohoo messenger from add and remove programs, i get a message.,.could not open install.log file. my computer is now starting to low down.. confussed, ...

1) select Start->Run
2) click Browse button
3) find unwise.exe in Yahoo! install folder (usually C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\unwise.exe), click OK in 'Browse' window
4) after that you should see in Run window the following:

"C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\unwise.exe"

5) edit this line, so it looks like:

"C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\unwise.exe" install.log

(after "the path" put the space and type install.log)

6) click OK in Run window

That should uninstall yahoo messenger.

Won't load Desktop

Is this running XP? Does the computer shut down or just go back to the welcome screen and ask for your password again?

If it returns to the welcome screen (and it is XP) get the following two files from another xp machine and copy them to the windows\system32 folder.

userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe

Restart the computer and log back in.

Hope this helps

How to log off

If you log off you only close your user session under windows, not turn off the computer.

If you suspend you turn off almost everything in the laptop like hardwire, cd or dvdrom and most peripherals but the computer stays on the consuming power.

If you hibernate what windows does is to store all in memory in a temporary file in the hard drive and turn off all the computer so when you turn it on again it will be as you last session with all your programs and documents you left open.

And if you turn off the computer it will close all your programs, close windows and turn off all the hardware.

My laptop won't shut down properly!

Is it possible that you have changed the settings of what buttons do what on your system? E.g. you could have changed the power button to "switch user" instead of "shut down", to check this (in XP) go to "Power Options" (in Control Panel" and then click on the "Advanced tab" at the top, then select "Shut down" from the drop down menu at the bottom of the window.

If this is already set to shut down then maybe you could do a system restore in case another setting has been changed, restore it to before the PC started doing this.

Alternatively try actually choosing "Turn off Computer" from the Log On screen (press Ctrl + L to get to this screen, or choose switch user/log off). If you are using Vista I beleive that there is a shut-down option from the Log In Page there (which again you can access by pressing Ctrl + L on the keyboard.

Hope this helps!
