the problem is hard water and there is a new product out called the dishwasher filtration system. it actually filters the water going into your dishwasher and leaves your dishes spot free. after the first load i was amazed that the white film was gone and my dishes were sparkling. you can get it at www.dishwasherfilter.com.

Are you using rinse aid?
that may help with the film.you may also have stuff down in the trap causing the water to drain slow.

SOURCE: dishwasher dishes not clean
first of all to remove residues from your d/w...what will work to remove the scale and soap residues is called "d/w
magic". it comes in a plastic square bottle and you can get it at any
grocery store, lowes, or sears.
you just remove the cap, put in the top rack and run a full cycle with the water heat boost option and it will clean out almost any residue from your unit. if it is really bad you may need to repeat this 2 times.
then in the future use dry powder soap, not tablets, fill both cups only about half full, use the normal cycle with the water heat option. also make sure the rinse dispenser is full with jet dry or similar product. then you should not get the residues returning.
after you have tried this then you should brush off any food particles before putting the dishes into the unit. do not assume the d/w will "chop" up any food left on the dishes. they are designed to chop up soft food items, but they also will get plugged at the same time. so its best to just brush the dishes off first.
next is if you still have washing problems, then make sure the unit is filling up with enough water. after you start a cycle, let the unit run for about 2 minutes, open the door and see if the water is just below the level of the heating element. thats how much water they need to circulate properly.
i will reply back if you want to know more.
good luck tom

If someone is putting dishes in the washer and obstructing the spray ams that would cause food to stay on dishes. After loading dishwasher and pushing in baskets make sure the spray arm doesnt hit any of the dishes causing them to not clean properly. If that doesnt work or is definately not your problem try removing the spray arm and seeing if it has food inside of it. Some times they get food build up in them and need to be flushed out.
