i have a alarm sound when turning computer on, it sometimes doesnt stop. its two sounds. i know my tower has been damaged externally in transit before i recieved it. is it fixable?

  • laffingravy Sep 03, 2008

The alarm sound from a hard drive is sometimes caused by internal damage. Imagine the armature dragging across the platters, reaching the center and returning to the outer edge to repeat the process. Much like a record needle skipping across an lp. It does indeed sound like a car alarm, with repeated whoops in a loop. I know of no cost effective cure for this problem other than replacing the hard drive.

my computer makes a loud alarm sound when it has been on for a long period of time. Sometimes even shutting the computer off doesn't stop the loud alarm. My computer is brand new and was custom built. What can I do to make this stop? Could it be caused due to the tower having too much dust inside it?

I'm assuming the alarm sound would be coming from your computer tower...in this case, what does the alarm sound like?  1 long, 2 short?

It sounds to me like your video card failed on you.  I assume you're posting here because your computer has this specific motherboard.  If you're comfortable opening your computer, you may want to make sure that your video card is set properly in its slot.  It will be in the brown component slot above all the white component slots.  Try to gently push it in first.  To really make sure it's seated properly, take the card out & put it back in.  If you're not sure how to do it or you're not comfortable doing it, then leave it alone.  Chances could also be that your video card is good, but something failed(slot, circuit, etc.) on the motherboard.

Another possibility is a bad setting in BIOS, which can cause errors.  In this case, you'd have to reset it, which also requires opening your computer.

Do you remember what you were doing on the computer before this happened?

Sounds like a bad power supply or hard drive. Try replacing the hard drive first and see if that cures it. Otherwise, the DVR could be bad.

I bought a new HP home computer, but I would like to use my previous Monitor which is bigger and is a Dell, so when I changed to my Dell monitor with my HP hard drive, there was no longer any sound coming...

new to you , its very old, and officially retired at HP.com
its 14 years old today. yah, old. last one sold at $30(fleabay)
what ever OS (windows) it runs its not safe on the internet.
windows 2000? or XP?

called legacy now. (means zero support at HP and MS)
no dell monitor stated, endless kinds over 20 years. made.
what makes you think the dell has speakers/ lacking the 3.5mm
phone jack
on it. did you forget to plug the sound cable in?

the hard drive has nothing to do with sound.
one can boot to a LINUX CD and play music all day long.
a fact. same with booting to USB thumb drive.(linux)

why not buy some external speaker, for $10 or at Goodwill(tm)
stores. dirt cheap or heck , upgrade to good sounding speaker
no monitor can ever do that. well.
good luck and next time tell the helper what DELL that is.
the model is on the sticker on the back most times.

Sad to say, you need a hard drive. The clicking sound you're hearing is typical of a drive that has gone bad. The monitoring message you see is from the motherboard's SMART monitoring, which checks several drive parameters and tells you when something is out of normal range. Often this gives some advance warning of a drive going bad, but this time it's just another sign the drive is already bad.

Installing a new hard drive is quite simple, with only two cables to plug in and some screws holding the drive in place. You will need to reinstall Windows and your applications since the new drive will be blank. There isn't anything you can do to repair the bad drive. If you have data on the drive that you don't have backed up on some other medium and you must have, there are companies that offer data recovery services. Just be aware it can be expensive.

Sorry I can't give you better news, but thanks for using Fixya.

When i m starting my laptop S.M.A.R.T hard drive failure is showing.how 2 recover this warning ? this warning is showing since last 4 days.plz tell me the solution

If it gives a warning that the hard drive is about to fail, it means the hard drive will fail soon and that you should back up your data while you have a chance.
When the hard drive fails then you need to replace the faulty and install Windows on the new hard drive with the laptop's device drivers and your programs to get a working laptop again.

It sounds (pun intended) like the disk-drive inside the casing overheated, and that created the alarm. Unfortunately for you, it seems to have been a "fatal" problem.

If your drive is still under warranty, W.D. will replace it.
If not, W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty Program" -- you can get a discount on buying a new My Book from W.D.'s web-site, because you currently have a W.D. product.

Have you tried another video card? Or even another monitor? If not, could be the motherboard especially if the video card is integrated into the motherboard.

Loud buzzin sound on start up

If the POST screen is coming up, showing the the correct amount of memory in the system, and then telling your hard disk failure or something similar, your hard drive has failed. Put a new hard drive in the system, reload your operating system and all drivers, and attempt to use the old hard drive as a second drive long enough to get any files you need from it.

Hard Drive Alarm & Refuses to boot up

Either your OS is corrupted or you have a serious hard drive issue. Not uncommon for the latter to go without any real warning.

Get a hold of the diagnostics software for your drive and run it. Don't be surprised if it fails.

Listen to your power supply and see if it is making a faint buzzing noise. Try your device with a new power supply. With a new power supply my drive now runs fine, and was not corrupted.
