If pressing the cc button on the Sharp remote does not turn off the closed captioning then the closed captioning is most likely coming from the cable box or whatever you have connected to this television. You can go into the cable box menu by pressing the menu button on the front when it is turned off. That's right turn off the cable box and then press menu on it to access the hidden menu that includes closed captioning. Scroll down to closed captioning and scroll over to disable. If the cc button on your Sharp remote control isn't turning them off then the captions may be coming from your cable box. The hidden menu to access closed captioning on the cable box is usually found by turning it off and then (yes I did say turn the cable box off) then press the menu button on the front of it immediately after turning it off. Then you navigate down to captions and disable them. When you turn the cable box back on the captions should no longer be there.
Captioned programs are marked in TV listings by "CC". so press the cc button on the remote and the closed caption option will be applied.press that cc button again to turn off the closed caption option. 1) Check the size and manufactured year of your television. If it was made after 1993 and is larger than 13 inches, it has a closed captioning system built into it. Otherwise, you may need to purchase a separate closed caption system, which are available at a number of online outlets.
2)Turn on your TV and access the menu for closed captioning. The precise location of the menu varies by television set. Most are accessible by pressing the "Audio" or "Set Up" menu on your remote, then scrolling down to the "CC" or "Closed Captioning" option. Check your owner's manual for precise instructions.
3)Turn the closed captioning option to the "On" position. It will then run closed captions for every program that broadcasts them. Newer sets may allow you to adjust the size, font and colors of the closed captioning letters to fit your individual tastes.
4)Tune to a particular program for a few minutes to make sure the closed captions are working. Note that while many broadcasts run closed captioning, not all of them do. If the captions don't appear, check your TV listing to ensure the program includes them.
5)If you're watching aDVdon your TV, access the DVD's "Set Up" menu. It should have captioned options, which allow you to show captions in English and possibly other languages as well.
The problem was with the Motorfolla Comcast cable box not my T.V. . I turned off my Comcast cable box, pressed menu on the remote to the cable box. This made a 16:9 ratio appear on the cable box's LED read out, and a bluish screen appear on my television. One of the options on my television was to turn on and off closed captioning. Therfore, I turned off closed captioning and the problem was solved.
Yes, if the closed caption mode is turned on in 'text mode' the set will display a black box even when no closed caption text is available. the normal closed caption mode is cc1. try turning closed caption to cc1 or off. tech7
Are you talking computer or TV?
Closed caption on a TV is when the volume is muted and it prints the speech in a box on the screen. You have to turn it on in the menu.
I had the same issue... here's what I did. If power off your cable box, then press the menu button, there's a selection to enable or disable Closed Captioning. This works for both HD series Motorola boxes Comcast offers, at least in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Hope this helps!

If you have the Suddenlink remote and the DVR box you can turn captions on or off by accessing a technical menu. To do this, press POWER and Menu buttons together (menu 2 times) to bring up a special menu. Select Closed Captions. On the popup menu select closed captions and using Select button change to OFF or ON as you wish. The trick is to get the menu to come up. Timing of pressing the two buttons is frustrating and it may take a few times befotre you get the special menu.
