Personally I would just go on Ebay and buy a transmitter and receiver setup. Will likely be as cheap as trying to buy one part plus if your current setup is the older crystal type you can upgrade to a 2.4ghz setup and then you have no worries about interference and the antennae are much shorter or internal.
Sorry to hear that your do not have a matching receiver for this set. The type of transmitter in this set is not compatiblewith just any actually its programed just for that keyboard mouse combo, However have you tried ebay.com?
See the transmitter in this unit is not like any remote control type of thing so what your thinking of will not work. You could call microsoft with a part number of ther set and see if they could get you a replacement but there is no gaurentee's.
I had a similar problem. First my hrm worked and the footpod did not. Then I tried to pair manually (for the umpeenth time) when the hrm was too far away, and I lost that pairing, and it still didn't find my footpod. Then I wet the hrm sensors and tried pairing again and then it picked it up. Finally, I switched batteries in the hrm and footpod and then it picked up the footpod. Now I'm headed to the store to stock up on batteries. Kinda upsetting that I have to buy batteries when I just got the thing, but probably costs less than the postage for sending it back!
Price is always a consideration when it comes to HRM's. You can easily go to Target and purchase a $40 HRM, but consider the quality. Buying a HRM is an investment and you get what you pay for. You don't have to spend hundreds of dollars to get a high quality HRM, but you do want to make sure that it will last a long time. When buying a HRM go for trusted brands such as Polar, LifeSource, or Mio. Some of the cheaper models won't fit as snugly and may be heavier than higher quality brands.
