SOURCE: Refrigerator Not Making Ice, Frost in Freezer and Refrigerator Not Cold

It has a defrost problem.  Most likely cause would be the defrost thermostat which clips onto the evaporator behind the back panel in the freezer.  Next most common would be the defrost timer.  Third would be the defrost heater.  Let me know if you want to try to test these parts.  If so I will need the entire model # from the sticker in the fridge or on older models on a plate at the bottom front below the door.

SOURCE: kenmore freezer and fridge is not cold - not frost build up - compress anf fans are all running

You need a qualified technician for this problem.
- Your unit may have leaking try to check for oil traces.
- The system maybe restricted, system reprocess is needed for this unit.
- If the unit is no frost try to check if there is an air circulation inside the unit. If no air is present then check your fan motor inside.

SOURCE: freezer not defrosting

The reason it is not defrosting is one of three things. First and most likely is that the Defrost Thermestat (aka BiMetal) is open and needs to be replaced, secondly it could be that the defrost timer is bad and lastly the heater can be bad. The bimetal and heater are found behind the back panel in the freezer section. The time is usually located near the controls in the fridge section. I would need you entire model number to tell you exactly where it is. To replace the either part is fairly straight forward. With the full model number I can walk you through the easiest way to test each part.

SOURCE: Frost Buildup in Frost Free unit.

You will have to check the defrost timer to make sure it is turning if it is working properly and you are getting power to the defrost heating element below the freezer coil it should get hot if you have a 115volts or so to the element and it does not get hot then you have a bad element

Defected DEFROST HEATER can cause frost build up on the panel at the back of the freezer, and freezer stop cooling and ice frozen on unit so air could not flow to refrigerator side.Water will coming out caused of unbalanced freezing, and causing the flooding of water in the floor. You must change this defroster heater assembly so it will works normal again..
Heavy Frost on the Coils
This is good! This indicates a defrosting system failure which is a simple control problem. It also means that the sealed system (compressor, evaporator coil, and all associated tubing) is fine as wine in summertime. Defrost system problems are easy fixes that anyone with a pulse can do with maybe just a little help from their friends. The problem will either be the defrost timer (or Adaptive Defrost Control board, if so equipped), the defrost thermostat, or the defrost heater. How to fix a Refrigerator that Doesn?t Cool or Runs Constantly

If the refrigerator’s light works and you can hear the refrigerator running but it cools poorly or does not stop running, make sure nothing is blocking the passageway between the freezer and the refrigerator compartments. If airflow is restricted by, for example, a loaf of bread situated in front of the passageway, the refrigerator won’t get cold. Be aware that a refrigerator will tend to run longer when it’s full of food, the door is opened frequently, or the room temperature is hot.If your refrigerator runs without stopping, it may be low on refrigerant and cannot reach the low temperature that the cold control dial summons. More likely, it is a defrost problem in which a component in the automatic defrosting system is faulty. This could be a defrost heater, a defrost timer, or a defrost terminator.
Before you call a repairperson, do the following:
1) Determine whether the refrigerator section is being cooled. If you see frost at the top of a “frost-free” refrigerator even when the cold control is set low, it means the refrigerator probably has a full charge of refrigerant and it is the thermostat that is faulty or out of calibration.
2) Try turning the cold control both up and down. If the compressor doesn’t shut off, the cold control may be broken. Call a repairperson. During the repair, it is a good idea to have the defrost timer and heaters checked to ensure they are working correctly.
3) Look at the condenser coils, located at the bottom of the refrigerator (behind the kick plate) or, in some cases, at the back. These coils disperse heat from inside the refrigerator out into the room with the aid of a fan. If the coils are dirty, the refrigerator won’t operate efficiently. You must clean them regularly.
4) Make sure the drain line under the evaporator coils, which goes to a pan underneath, is not plugged up (water should drip into the pan when the refrigerator is defrosting).
5) To put off having the refrigerator repaired for a few days, you may be able to defrost it manually with a hair dryer—if you can access the cooling coils in the freezer section. Excessive moisture in the coils can turn into a frozen mass, reducing efficiency. Be very careful when using the hair dryer near a water source as there is a serious risk of electrical shock. Also be careful not to melt the plastic parts.

Maytag Refrigerator MFF2557HES - won't stop running, everything frozen... despite adjustment to temp setting What to do, please and thank you?

Possible that the thermostat or the control unit is faulty as it fails to cut off the compressor. In some cases the frost or ice formation can reduce the connection or wire contact of the thermostat and so the function will not work. You need to remove the freezer rear covers to confirm if the wires are intact and also if the thermostat is working along with the auto defrost timer.

Have a maytag french door fridge on top freezer on bottom, fridge is not staying cold, frezzer works just fine?

Hi

Check the back wall or floor of the freezer section for frost. Check the freezer (evaporator) fan to see if it is running. Check the condenser coils (under the unit) for blockage from dust. Check the condenser fan (under the unit) to see if it is running.
If you have frost in the freezer there is a problem with the defrost system and the freezer will start to warm eventually as well as the fresh food section. If that is the problem you can check the defrost terminator, defrost heater/s, and the defrost timer or adaptive defrost control If used on your unit or the main control board if so equipped. These things usually require dismantling the freezer and other areas of the refrigerator to be checked.

You could defrost the freezer by disconnecting the power to the refrigerator and letting it sit for at least 24 hours with both doors wide open to allow the frost to melt completely but it will build up again in 1-2 weeks and start the warming up again.

Please get back to us if you have further query else please accept the suggestion.

After recent power outages and freezing temperatures in our vacation home the refrigerator portion of our refrigerator stopped cooling, but the freezer still works. Our refrigerator is a 4 year old...

Sounds like one of two problems. Either the fan motor that pushes the cold air from the freezer is not turning (Burned out) or stuck with ice because of an incomplete defrost of frost. Check to make sure the fan is running (any time the fridge is running) if not remove the panel in the freezer and see if there is abuild up of frost or ice around the fan. If you are not comfortable with removing the panel let it defrost with unit unplugged for a 24 hrs with the doors open and try again.

The door on our Maytag MSD2351HE did not shut entirely two nights ago. The freezer stopped working. Any ideas?

Can you hear and feel the fan blowing in freezer?

Problem will normally resolve it self after a day or two of unit going through defrost cycle. Do you see frost build up on back lower wall of freezer? If so the frost build up is blocking airflow. A hair dryer could be used to defrost, remove back panel and shut off refrigerator. Reassemble and check again after a couple of hours.

Freezer works but refrigerator does not

First, open the freezer and look for a snowy frost build-up. See if it's bad enough to cause bulging in the inner panel at the back. If so, you may have a defrost problem. Also, make sure nothing is blocking the ariflow between the freezer and fresh food sections.

Listen to see if the compressor is running. If it is, open the refrigerator side and turn the freezer control off, then back on, three times within six seconds. Did the compressor stop running? If not, the problem is very likely the adaptive defrost control board. Replace it.

If it does stop after "forcing a defrost cycle", you probably have a burnt-out defrost heater. It will need to be replaced.

How great is the freezer temperature? Look for frost on the freezer back wall. If there is frost there you have a defrost system problem.
the refrigerator is cooled by air it receives from the freezer. When the freezer coil freezes up the air circulation stops.
