Review the support for this particular model on E-Machines website, but you should be able to open the side panel and remove the drive with relative ease. http://www.emachines.com/

My external hd (fantom titanium) doesn't regularly open on my mac suddenly

Inside the case of that Fantom is a regular harddrive.

Also inside that outer case is a small circuit board, that either the harddrive plugs directly into it; or there is an interface block the harddrive plugs into, and there are wires from it, that connect to the small circuit board.

(The USB cable is connected to the small circuit board)

It is this small circuit board that usually goes bad.

My suggestion is to remove the harddrive inside, purchase an economical external enclosure, and install the harddrive in it.
Have your harddrive back, and be able to use it as an external harddrive again also.

The Harddrive Inside:
Harddrives are measured by their Width.
A laptop harddrive is 2.5 inches across in width. (2-1/2 inches)
A desktop harddrive is 3.5 inches.

The Fantom Titanium II 500GB's harddrive inside, is 3.5 inches,

WD 500G HDD suddenly un-readable; changed name to local disk, says I need to format in order to use it. I have tons of important stuff on there.


Could you confirm if the problem with the drive not being recognized is a problem with the USB cable? I have a 250GB passport and it worked fine with my XP. Once I decided to reformat it to NTFS and tried to do so by plugging into my new windows7 laptop the problems started.

You could try using another USB port on your computer. Perhaps that USB port you have the IOmega external harddrive plugged into is bad.

More than likely not, though.

The problem is usually inside the IOmega's case. (External enclosure)

Inside that IOmega external harddrive's case is a regular harddrive as used in a desktop, or laptop computer.
To explain;

Harddrives are physically rated in width, as well as type, and size.
A laptop harddrive is 2.5 inches across in width. (2 and a half inches)
A desktop harddrive is 3.5 inches.

The larger desktop harddrives are usually used in external harddrives that are 500GB, and larger.
(Not always the case when it comes to the 500GB size)

Harddrives have two technologies, or types.
IDE (PATA) or SATA.

You didn't state the Model Number so I can't even hazard a guess at this point.

The harddrive inside the case plugs into an Interface.
The Interface may be separate, and connected via a cable to a small circuit board, or the Interface may be soldered directly to the small circuit board.

It is this Interface, and circuit board which go bad.
The solution is to remove the harddrive inside, purchase an inexpensive external enclosure, and install the harddrive into it.

The external enclosure has a USB cable just like the IOmega external harddrive did.

As stated the harddrive inside is just a normal harddrive. Made by a harddrive manufacturer.
Could be a Western Digital, or Seagate, or Hitachi, or Maxtor, or Fujitsu, or IBM, just to name a few.
(Seagate bought out Maxtor)

On the harddrive will be a decal with it's specifications.
You will also be able to physically measure the width.

This external hookup will support harddrives that are 2.5, or 3.5 inches in width, (And 5.25), plus will support both IDE (PATA) or SATA harddrives,

Not a good source for information on disassembling an IOmega external harddrive, but there is very little info available.

(It isn't that tough for any external harddrive enclosure. The screws are usually hidden under labels, and the case pops apart in two halves. Just a little different design here, and there)

Lap top can't find hard drive


Hi,

Here are some steps that you can try.

- Check if the harddrive is recognized in the BIOS (Basic Input Output System). Normally you will see values beside "Drive 0" at the first page if the harddrive is detected. If it says none or blank, then it is not detected. Reload BIOS default settings and try to boot up the unit to see if it will pick up the harddrive.
- If the harddrive is not detected in the BIOS, you need to unscrew the harddrive compartment at the bottom of the laptop.
- Reinsert the harddrive and check harddrive cable. Also try to use a good known harddrive if yours is defective.

When I start my laptop it makes loud beeps, then it says no hard drive detected... Whats wrong?


The harddrive is not working, or is not connected properly.

Shut the laptop down.
Remove the battery.
Turn the laptop upside down.
Remove the screws in order to remove the harddrive cap. (The acer laptops have small signs on the caps. The cap that has the little circe-cylinder signs on it, should unlock the harddrive)
Remove the screws keeping the harddrive in place.
Remove the harddrive.
Clean the connectors on both the harddrove as the motherboard.
Reconnect the harddrive and turn the laptop on.

If it is working, turn it off, and fit all the screws in again.

If it is not working, then you probably have to change the harddrive. You could also connect the harddrive to another computer, to make sure if it is broken.

I have left my hard drive off for 12 hours as adviced, but on turning it on again the problem is still the same. The drive is trying to boot up over and over again.


My solution will be multipart, and lengthy. So if you're a coffee drinker, I suggest you make yourself a fresh pot

Reasoning? I'm going to explain a little bit about the hardware makeup of an external harddrive, and multiple solutions that in the hopes of one of them, may cure your problem.
I'm trying to arm you with as much information as I can, so you can use deductive reasoning, and take the best approach for You.

General symptoms that affect an external harddrive,

1.Bad USB cable. Although it is unlikely, USB cables can go bad.

2.Power supply.
To solve this problem, you need another power supply just like the one you have, for a test. ( Not exactly laying around. I have a work around for that, which I will detail later)

3.Controller failed.
Inside that external enclosure, (The metal, or plastic box of the external harddrive), is an ordinary harddrive such as used in a desktop, or laptop computer.

Yours has a Desktop size harddrive in it. (They measure 3 and a half inches across in width. 3.5"
Laptop HD's measure 2.5")

Harddrives are IDE, or SATA. All harddrives have been going to SATA for quite some time.
Yours is a SATA harddrive.

Inside the external case is an Interface, connected on a Controller Board.

Harddrives use metal round pins that are built on the harddrive itself. These in turn plug into an Interface, or also can be referred to as a Socket.

With an external harddrive, the harddrive itself may plug right into the Interface, (Socket. The metal pins of the harddrive plug into the Interface socket holes), or the Interface plugs onto the harddrive, and cables lead from it to a small PCB in the external harddrive enclosure. (Case)

The metal pins transfer data (Information) back and forth. (Signal pins)
Power for the harddrive is also transmuted through these pins.
Just like plugging in a lamp to a receptacle.

The Controller Board is a PCB. Printed Circuit Board.
This is connected to the bottom of the harddrive. It controls the mechanism inside the harddrive.

When you arrive at Page 5 you'll see the Controller Board. (Their term is Electronics Board)
The Controller Board can be safely removed from the harddrive, and not ruin the harddrive.

You cannot open a harddrive case itself, where the Platters and Arms reside, Unless you have the proper environment.
('Clean Room'. A 99.9% dust free room that would make NASA jealous! This type of room is where a typical harddrive is assembled)

If you use an ESD wrist s-trap and connect it to a good ground source, plus work on a table, you can safely remove, and replace the Controller Board. (No magnetism Anywhere near! NO speakers!)
An average ESD (Electro Static Discharge) wrist s-trap is about $6.

At the bottom of the photo is the back of the harddrive. All the way to the right are 4 pins. These are not recommended to be used on a SATA harddrive, but are for power to the drive.

All the way to the left, is a connection which has 15 pins for the Power connector, and to the right of it are 7 pins for the Data connector.
(It's in the upside down U shaped opening. There is a rectangular wide opening all the way to the left, then a narrow rectangular opening, then the upside down U shaped opening)

4.Harddrive failure. The mechanism inside the harddrive itself has failed. These are mechanical components, as you can see in the Howstuffworks link. Average lifespan for a harddrive is 5 years. Depends on how much it's used.

Solutions:

A.If the harddrive is still under warranty, you can see if the manufacturer will replace it. HOWEVER, they do not guarantee anything that is stored on it. You will get another harddrive minus your information.

B.You can take it to a Data Recovery Specialist. Average price is $50 per hour on up. Average time is minimum 1 hour, and usually takes 3.
I could be mistaken, do research for your area.

C.
1.You could start with using another USB cable, and see if this is the problem.

2.Then it's on to the power supply. This solution cures 2 possible problems. I didn't mention, that sometimes the small PCB board in the external case also goes bad. Most of the time, according to hits on the internet, this is a major problem with a LaCie external hardrive.

The small Printed Circuit Board inside their external harddrive case, (Enclosure), goes bad.

Solution is to buy an external enclosure for a 3.5" SATA harddrive. Take the harddrive out of the LaCie external enclosure, and install it in this one.

Check computer hardware websites on the internet. (Examples of two are Tigerdirect, and Newegg) Look for Harddrive Enclosure. Then 3.5, then SATA.
Average price for a decent one is $20.

3.If this doesn't cure it it may be the Printed Circuit Board on the bottom of the harddrive. If your data warrants saving, then you may want to buy the SAME style of harddrive, borrow it's PCB, and get your information off of your old harddrive. More cost I grant you, but cheaper than a Recovery Specialist. You aren't buying another LaCie external harddrive, you are buying just the saqme SATA harddrive used inside.

Past this, the harddrive mechanism itself has quit. Only a very competent, reliable, Recovery Specialist can recover your data, if possible.

Having a similar problem with the La Cie 500gb. Powerbook G4.


The problem that has been inherent with all LaCie external harddrives, is the interface in the case itself.

Interface:
All external harddrives have a Style of harddrive that is used in a laptop, or one that is used in a desktop computer.
Laptop harddrives are 2-1/2 inches across in width.
Desktops are 3-1/2 inches across.
Your LaCie will have a 3.5, (3-1/2) inch desktop style harddrive, inside the case.

There are two main Types of harddrives.
IDE and SATA. (There is also a newcomer. SSD. SSD isn't being used in LaCie external harddrives at the moment, to my knowledge)

Your LaCie will use a SATA harddrive inside it.

The photo of this harddrive is tilted at an angle, that doesn't readily show the interface connection, but it helps to explain.

At the bottom of this harddrive in the photo, and to the left, is the interface area.

Viewing the harddrive, look at the four metal pins on the extreme right of the harddrive. To the left of these pins is the Jumper pin area. (Has a white jumper on two of those pins)

To the left of the Jumper area is an opening, and to the left of that, is a long slot. The first small slot area is for the 7-pin Interface cable.
(Data cable) The next slot to the left, is for the 15-pin power cable.

This 7-pin Interface mates up to socket holes in a connector, of the case of the LaCie external harddrive.

It is this interface connector, inside the LaCie external harddrive case, that is the problem.
Solution?
Buy a quality, in-expensive External Enclosure, take the harddrive out of the LaCie, and install it in this enclosure.

Sometimes the hard drive will connect and sometimes it won't.


There have been problems plaguing the LaCie external harddrives, for quite some time now.

The issue directly relates to the interface, inside the external enclosure. I don't know if you are acquainted with harddrive designs, or the interface that they plug into. If you are, disregard the following.

Looking at this illustration, note where it points to -> IDE Connector. The illustration isn't very good, but those dots are metal pins.
The connection inside your external harddrive,
that connects to the harddrive itself, is called an Interface. This is a plug that has socket holes, to match those metal pins.

Now we go a little deeper. There are two types of harddrives. One is an IDE harddrive, the other type is a SATA harddrive. Your LaCie
will have a SATA harddrive inside.
Instead of the 40 pins that an IDE harddrive has, the interface for a SATA harddrive has 7.
(It has 15 pins for the power connection)

Now my solution:
Should you wish to save data that is on your LaCie external harddrive right now, I suggest you buy an external enclosure, (SATA), take out the hardrdive thats in your LaCie, and install it in the enclosure.

Since, the dimensions of the, LaCie design by Porsche 160GB external harddrive are:
Height -> 1.4 inches, (About 1-1/2 inches)
Width -> 4.4 inches, (About 4-1/2 inches)
Length -> 7.4 inches, (About 7-1/2 inches),
I'm willing to bet the harddrive inside is a desktop harddrive size. (3.5 inches across in width)

I would say either a bad harddrive or bad boot sector. If you are looking for a DIY solution, youll want to test the harddrive by running disk wizard or something similar or pulling the harddrive and putting it in a harddrive enclosure (available from NewEgg.com). The enclosure will hookup to another computer through usb or firewire and will allow you to backup your files if the harddrive is still good. If the harddrive isnt good, youll get errors while copying the files or it wont allow you to access the harddrive at all. Else, take it to a computer repairman to have them pull the harddrive and run tests on it.

Wan't boot up


If the dvr isnt booting the harddrive, then the harddrive isnt seated properly in the removeable harddrive drawer, or the harddrive is improperly formated, or you have the wrong type of harddrive, or the master/slave settings on the harddrive are not set properly (master). what ive found is an 80gig/160gig is the most that these things will handle. and some brands work and some brands don't. and the harddrives have to be IDE/EIDE type drives. but it sounds like a harddrive interface problem. They like the older harddrive formatts/(not xp/vista)....good luck!!!!
