SOURCE: reciever only allows 2 channels(speakers) at a time.

Two solutions:
1. make sure you are sending a 5.1 signal to the receiver (my DVD player was configured to only send stereo even if I picked the 5.1 soundtrack, i had to fix that). Read the manual to see the indicator lights that would light up if you are sending a DTS signal or Dolby Digital.
2. Use the 'surround modes' to at least get pseudo surround

SOURCE: pioneer vsx-519 no sound from center and surround

Make sure that the sound field/programme you have selected is dolby digital not stereo.(On the amp)
You also need to check on the display that is says DIGITAL not ANOLOUGE, as only a digital input, Optical fibre cable, HDMI, COAX will be a digital signal.
If you are using red and white rca connectors, it is not going to work, as this is an Anolouge signal.

All 5 speakers work on test mode but on surround sound the left and right rear speakers are not working. How can this be?

Hello Ruby,

This is because your receiver is not in the correct surround sound mode for the number of channels being sent from the audio source, i.e. your TV or DVD player. It is likely your receiver is set for Dolby Digital (DD). You will need to switch your receiver to a Dolby Pro Logic (PL or PL II) setting to get audio from the rear speakers using your current audio source.

If you are unsure how to do this, please reply to me with the brand and model of the receiver. Some receivers have a "Surround Mode" button on the front of the unit or the remote. If you want to include further details of your setup, I can also give you some advice on attaining the best audio quality with the equipment you are using. You may be able to get Dolby Digital surround by changing some audio settings on the audio source or using a different connection.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Regards,
BElectric

Since you seem to be having problems with 'simulated' surround, how does ACTUAL surround material behave?

Have you tried AFD with certifiable multichannel source material to verify the surround speakers receive programmed sound??

Do the Dolby Digital or Pro Logic indicators light?

What about the other modes?

Our new lg 5.1 surround sound system will only play full surround sound on some new release blu ray films and the rest will only play through the front 3 speakers as dolby stops as soon as you get past the...

Dolby will only activate when it has information for all 5 channels. For normal stereo only left, right and bass boost speakers work, so you lose center and rear speakers. The system should have an option to play SIMULATED surround sound, to activate all speakers. In many systems, this option is called dolby prologic, simulated or some other fancy name.

Center and rear speakers not working

In regard to the rear speakers, my system is an LG and the rear speakers will only work if the format that i'm watching (TV, DVD) is in Dolby surround sound 5.1. Normal tv will not give you surround sound unless it says otherwise, usually it will flash up on the screen at the start of the show. So test the unit with something that you know is in 5.1

Reciever only allows 2 channels(speakers) at a time.

If the amplifier is not receiving a surround sound signal, you will get nothing from the rear speakers and probably nothing from the front centre. Play a dvd in dolby surround and it will work.
