SOURCE: Canon Powershot SX10 IS auto focus unreliable

I don't this its an error. I have used this Canon SX10 IS Camera for nearly a year now I haven't had this kind of problem.

Usually auto focus take few seconds to focus on object depending on distance and lighting. That might be the problem ?

When recording a video zoomed in how do you get the camera to focus on the object ?

Focusing is one of the most difficult parts for every digital camera. Special on the end of the moon, and if the lights are low. Every camera needs sharp contrasting backgrounds and no distracting other high contrast objects in the foreground.
Be aware when you soon in to the end of the zoom range, you can't focus on close objects. Minimum focus distance can be a few meters.
It could be you switched to silence the focus noise, what can be bad for focusing.
See what the manual is telling you about zoom and focus:

Read the manual again, and check what settings would be the best for you while shooting video with a long zoom setting.

Why does the picture constantly go out of focus while filming on zoom

I am not sure if this is the right solution. If you mean the focus is constantly changing while shooting in video mode, you have to change your settings to something other than tracking and auto focus. When these menus are selected, the camera constantly adjust it's lens to maintain the subject in focus. If the subject moves, the camera re-adjust again and that usually records the blurred moments in the video.

No focus when zooming in

from the Manuel
? When the zoom speed is high, the subject may not be focused easily.
Also you Focus could be not set on auto which thinks the subject is either closer or father away from the camera.
Here is the Manuel for reference.

change auto focus to single focus mode,
since it is on continuous auto focus on default, it would focus all the time so you don't need to click half way before taking a picture

Digital zoom settings for Panasonic PV-Gs39

Hi, You have a tough one to manage because these cameras were not meant for low lighting situations. I have tried on a few occasions with varying degrees of success. Smaller cameras like these are light hungry; the more the better. But you can try some things. If you have the camera's user manual, go to the secition on "Recording in Special situations". It will tell you how to change your camera to manual focus, and change the auto exposure (AE) to something like spotlight. But you may have to test this. If you had a high-end professional camera you would change the "gain" but this camera doesn't have that feature. Here's a link to the user manual if you don't have it: http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/vProdSupportModel?displayTab=R&surfModel=PV-GS9&modelNo=PV-GS9&storeId=15001&catalogId=11017&itemId=68628&displayServiceCenter=true# The stage lights will mess up your auto focus, so it's best to change to manual focus. The stage lights will make the camera continually change focus which wil be very annoying when you view it on the television. In other words, the person you are filming will be in focus for a few seconds, and then the camera will spot something else and focus on that, and then back to the main character again. And again and again. I do not recommend the digital zoom. This creates an interpolated image, in other words, it's the "computer chip" that changes the pixels. The inmage quality won't be very good. Your a camera operator. Get in there and get the footage. : ) You don't have to be rude like the popparazzi, but get as close to the stage as possible. I would recommend testing during a rehearsal if at all possible. That way you can change the settings to get the best possible image, rather than during a live performance. Good luck. Thanks for reviewing me. NewMediaMan

Noise during video recording

Turn off Continuous AF (auto focus) to prevent recording camera noise during video capture. When you turn off Continuous AF, you may notice a narrower area of focus or depth of field, especially if you zoomed to a telephoto position before recording. Turn the Mode dial to Video, then press the Menu button. Highlight the Continuous AF menu, then press the OK button. Highlight Off, then press the OK button. (On is the default.) Press the Menu button to turn off the menu screen. This setting remains until you change it, change the Mode dial, or turn off the camera.
