I have the same problem since the early beginning after purchase. I'm very upset with NAD for the zero-value technical service in Italy. After 2 months they gave me back my C541 with new defects (the tray now doesn't work properly). They have tried - they said - different optics without fixing the problem. Does anybody know if a compatible optic / tray exists?
Thank you

this has the sony mechanism so if you take the lid off
and unscrew the 2 screws, 1 at either end of the cd clamp and remove it,
you should see part of a large cog just under the front of the cd tray,
try turn this clockwise and the tray should open.
once open, you
should be able to see a small plastic cover, loosen this slightly and
replace the belt as this is prone to slipping on this mechanism stopping it clamping the disc properly when
closed.
the sound you say is the spindle motor, is actually the loading motor trying to lift the whole laser mechanism up towards the puck to clamp the disc as there is not enough tension left in the belt.
help it along by hand and you'll see what i mean.
hope this helps?
Check the disc you're using for scratches and dirt. If the disc is damaged it won't play properly, regardless of the CD player's ability to function. You can use a CD repair device like the "Disc Doctor" to repair the CD or purchase a new CD.
Clean the laser lens with a CD laser lens cleaning disc. CD laser lens cleaning discs can be purchased at most electronics retailers or online. Insert the laser lens cleaning disc and follow the instructions.
Insert a correctly-formatted, undamaged disc into your player. Listen to see if it begins to read the disc. If it continues to make no sound and gives you the same message, then the problem is probably that your disc is not spinning in the device.
Clean the lens while the DVD player is open. A dirty lens is most likely the cause of your no-disc error. The lens should be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab.
