Dont know if this is the answer, but I have had the same problem. It happens whenever Windows xp gets a maintenance upgrade. The solution is to delete and reinstall the printer. The main problem seems to be that the Brother drivers load some .dll files into the %system root% (usually Windows) directory rather than System32 where they should be.
