SOURCE: Maxtor Basics external portable hard drive not getting detected

I have a Western digital model wd2500b007-rnn
and I cannot get either my PC or my laptop to recognize the drive. I isolated the drive to another computer with the same error. It says USB device not reognized. I also tried a different port. I have not tried different cables. Can I retrieve the old data on the drive?

Did you find a resolution for this? I am having the same problem. None of my PCs can recognize the drive. Formatting seems to be the only choice but I need to recover my old data first.

Does your drive make any sounds similar to these? If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it if you need that data.
If not - try to remove the drive from the enclosure and connect it directly to the computer to recover your files.

SOURCE: My external hard drive is unreadable

Does you drive make any sounds like these? If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it. If not - try to remove the drive from USB casing and connect it directly to your PC or put into another USB enclosure. This should help if the problem is with the enclosure itself and not with the drive.

SOURCE: Lacie Hard Drive won't connect via USB anymore

I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most USB portable / external hard drives and OTHER devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further

USB flash drives can fail for no apparent reason.
Sandisk Cruzers are especially bad for this.

USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care.
This is a real hard drive ! and knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.

It is possible to remove drives from the enclosures in most cases and connect directly inside a PC to fully check it.

Note that if you hear a drive clicking or pinging this could be the worst thing you would hear.
Known as "The Click Of Death"

If none of the above steps help look at updating the drivers from the manufacturers web site in the support section.

DO NOT PLACE IN A FREEZER !
THIS IS VERY OLD ADVICE FOR VERY OLD TYPES OF HARD DRIVES THAT ARE NO LONGER EVEN MADE. A FREEZER CAN CAUSE MORE DAMAGE.

SOURCE: Connecting WD Passport external HD with Belkin N+ router

I had this same issue. Found it to be a sequencing issue. Plug the USB into the router with the power off to the HDD. Power on the HDD and you should be able to get to it fine. Also make sure you have the latest firmware on the router.

Portable hard drives are extremely useful. Make sure you have both HD cords connected correctly One coming from your HD to your PC and the other as a power cord. From there, you should simply click "Start" go to "My Computer" and your external drive should show up right there.

Can't figure out how to copy info from Passport to my hard drive

the question here is how did you manage to get the info saved into your passport portable hd in the first place? I don't mean to sound like a smartass but if you did save the files onto your portable hard drive before you wiped your pc's hard drive it should work the same way backwards if you want to access and restore the files back on to your pc from your portable hard drive.

now to answer your question you should simply...
1. plug your portable hard drive (I mean power and usb cable both).
2. turn on your passpost portable hard drive (if needed).
3. your computer should see your portable hard drive now being connected to the usb ports, wait a few seconds for the computer to recognize it and give you access to it.
4. if you don't a pop up asking you what to do with the new device you just connected (passport port. hd) simply go to start>my computer and under removable devices category you should see your portable hard.
5. double click your portable hard drive and you should be staring at the contents of your passport hd.
6. you can copy some or all the folders you find in your portable hd on to a folder that resides in "my documents" folder which is a folder that resides in your pc's hard drive. (if you are not accoustumed to move folder around from one device to another, please ask the help of someone that is familiar with this task or simply select a folder, right click on it, select "copy", then go to the target location, right click on an empty space and select "paste")

if you are not able to do this 1-6, you may have not completed setting your system, and it's possible that you may still need to install drivers for you usb hub (for instance) to have your system being able to work with usb devices.

post back with your findings and any details of any problems encountered along the way.

hope this helps!

My pc can not recognise the TEAC HD 35 PUK

to start is this the same computer from when the device worked ? , if so there should be two cables one is for power the other is for data , also if there is any clicking noise the HD could be damaged and not spinning up to usable RPM , after plugging in the power and data cable
the HD should automatically show up in in the cache
( bottom right side next to clock ) if not there look in
my computer you should see it next to the C drive
still if no luck check with a new data cable and to make sure the unit is powering up , still if nothing try
another USB , sometimes USBs just stop working with no explanation , still if nothing happens after
checking everything try on another known working computer , if you still have a problem write me back

You can get the driver on Teac's site. The 98se driver you download depends on your serial number, so have that handy.

Good luck...
