Question about Canon PIXMA MP540 All-In-One InkJet Printer

Open Question

The print head seems to be the cause of a persistent B200 error message.

I have tried the suggested solutions of unplugging the machine and switching on again, with and without the cover being open. I have removed and replaced the print head and ensured that all cartridges have ink - these have been refilled, but usually the machine works with these. I have read somewhere that you can clean the print head with warm water, but this looks dramatic given the electronic bits therein. Ideas please?

SOURCE: Canon Pixma MP610 CARTRIDGE PROBLEM

HI. Try holding the reset button for 6 seconds to overide the error. This may dissable the chip so it won't report but will allow you to keep printing. Simply check the ink tanks visually.

Refilling will give the same error too, again dissable the error.

SOURCE: MP730 "wrong cartridge" error

Well...
I can tell you what I did.

I came up with this "wrong cartridge" problem today, searched around the web -- there are a number of ideas -- and then started off on my own.

Perspective: I bought this MP730 in 2003 and have been filling the same set of ink tanks since then. Never had a problem with that. Don't know offhand how many pages I've printed, but I refill the ink every couple of months.

What I did...
I removed the ink tanks and the print head. The print head area was all gunked up with ink as well as the flanges the print head sits on (still in the printer). I DID NOT dunk the print head in water. Something in me says water and electronics is not a good thing. The refill ink package I buy comes with printhead and cartridge cleaner -- smells like alcohol, but who knows. I used that and a combination of Q-tips and kleenex to clean any ink away from the print head and nearby surfaces. I also dripped some cleaner into the print head holes the ink tanks plug into and then dried off the whole print head assembly. I purposely did nothing else. That way, I'd know if I'd found the solution.

I put everything back together and fired it up. The printer cycled itself, removed the "wrong cartridge" message and stood ready for me to print. Finished, right??? Not so fast.

I printed out a Windows test page.....it was totally blank!!! Pause....printed out 2 more.... blank... Uh-Oh.

So, I lifted the lid on the printer, lifted the print head lever, jostled the print head a little to ensure good contact, put everything back together and printed another Windows test page....PERFECT!!!

Note: some writers mentioned cleaning a switch off to the right in the printer. I looked at that area and it IS pretty gunked up. But I didn't touch it to clean it up. That way I had a better idea of what DID fix it. I left it gunked. Of course, maybe all I really had to do was wiggled the print head and put it back together. But at least my print head is clean now. ;-)

So, that's all I did. Don't know if it wil help you, but it's a start.

SOURCE: Canon MP470: "Print Head is not installed. Install Print Head"

Some printer brands have a cute scheme that reads a "new" cartridge as good, but the refilled one has a small fuse link that is burned out by the printer. Try factory new cartridges. Unplug the printer power for a bit to reset the printer.

What is error B200 when attempting to power up

http://www.printerdiary.com/2011/09/canon-error-b200-how-to-fix-it.html

Error B200 on Canon printers is a print head error. The print head is what the cartridges sit in inside of the printer. To attempt to resolve it, do the following:

(1) Open the printer and wait for the carriage to slide over
(2) Remove the ink cartridges from the print head.
(3) Use cotton swabs dipped in hot water to thoroughly clean the print head and each ink cartridge.
(4) Repeat this until there is no ink residue coming off on the cotton swab.
(5) Once finished, allow to dry and replace the cartridges
(6) Try to print something now

If that does not work then you have one of two possibilities:
(1) One of the ink cartridges is defective and causing the error
(2) If it's definitely not that, then the print head will need to be replaced.

I'm getting a b200 error message and I MUST print tonight!

It is referenced on other message boards that the B200 error means "Printhead Temperature exceeded", which can be caused by an ink cartridge running out, yet the printer continues the operation. You could try unplugging the printer for a couple minutes to let it cool down, and try again. If it still has the error, you'll most likely have to send it in for repairs.

I can not do anything on my printer. When I turn it orn the Error Code B200 is flashing on the printer screen. I need to know how to get rid of this code.

That error code is not listed on the known error codes for that model. Something to try is to turn off the machine, unplug the power cord from the power supply for five minutes. Plug the cord back in and turn on the machine. Give that a try and see if that fixes your problem. Otherwise I would suggest contacting Canon customer support at 1-800-OKCANON. Take care & good luck!
