Sounds like bad wiring to, or in the foot pedal. Unplug from electric supply first then have a look inside

My Bernina "Record" of 1972 suddenly stitches away without foot pedal command, infact same with pedal unplugged Only way to stop is cut AC power

Something with in your machine seems to be shorting out. Since it is many years old I suspect you have wires that the insuation is rotten and making a short. I have seen this before. Should get it repaired if it's worth it. You could be shocked or hurt.

The foot pedal gets hot after a few minutes

It sounds as though the foot pedal is the problem. Maybe a shorted out wire in the actuator (rheostat). When your foot is off the pedal there should be no power running through it. If it has a short then it "thinks" the pedal is partially depressed to the slow position so runs at that speed. If the pedal can be removed/unplugged from the machine, do this and see if the machine stops running.

My air elecntronic SU, which is thirty years old, doesn't always stop sewing when I take my foot off the air pedal. The machine keeps running until I tap a number of times on the pedal or turn the machine...

This will be the bellows inside the side panel of the machine where your foot pedal air line feeds into rather than the foot pedal. Really short of cutting or sitting on the air line with your chair, not much goes wrong there. It,should be repairable if you can locate a Swiss Elna trained/experienced techician.

the sewing machine and foot pedal need to be checked for a short in the connections of the machine or the foot pedal or if the foot pedal needs to be replaced

Will only do straight line stitching and will not stop when foot taken off foot pedal

could have a short in the wiring since the machine will not stop when your foot is taken off foot pedal.
could be a damaged part or the machine may need some type of adjustment because of the straight line stitching.
it would be a good idea to have the sewing machine checked.

Foot pedal not working

Well, you are definitely getting power from the electric plug in.

Let's do some diagnostic work. Do you hear anything when you press the foot pedal? Any hum? Did you happen to leave it in bobbin winding mode?

your machine doesn't have a "sew" button for use without the pedal. So please rotate the hand wheel toward you as you press the pedal. Did the motor take over and sew?

If you know someone with a meter... have them test the pedal. (they will place probes on/in the part that plugs in which tests for shorts, etc.) If that tests ok... then we know it's something more than the pedal and it will need servicing by a Singer Tech.
