DVD drive makes a noise and wont read

This issue occurs due to corrupt registry settings.
Run Microsoft Fix it to remove drive limits. You can find the fix in the HP website provided below:

Also reinstall the CD/DVD drive drivers from device manager. If the drive still makes loud noise when any disc is inserted, then it states that it has gone bad. If u r under warranty contact HP to get a free replacement.

I think its not the problem of the software so try using an external drive to check if it works then it will be the problem of the ray of your dvd drive.

When you get no disk error, that is usually because of a problem with the optical laser lens that is dirty, faulty or opaque, and will start operating on certain disks better than others.

In that case you will hear disk spinning, whirring and clicking, but the TOC (table of content track at start of CD/DVD will not be read, therefore the error.

Whe this problem is starting you may be able to read only CD, DVD or Blue ray, or for example only DVD-R and not +R , or only to read and not to write and so on. After more prolonged usage , often the unit goes losing the rest of functions, and ends up not reading anything at all.

If instead there is no noise, and disk does not spin at all , then there is a faulty motor, or the motor micro-switch is bad. This situation is far less common than the lens problem.

Try first using a CD/DVD or Blue ray lens cleaner disk to clean the lens. If that does not work you will need to disassemble the drive , and clean lens directly with q tips and isopropyl alcohol, or to replace the the whole drive unit.

sounds like the DVD drive is in need of some repair there if its making some odd sounds and miss reading CDs and DVDs also make sure connections are good behind the drive

I opened the DVD door and something looked crooked... I pushed it down to straighten it... it clicked back into place and it works great! haha. I bought it off craigslist for only $15.. great deal. :)

In many cases, the drive motor that moves the disc tray in or out becomes inoperable. It may get a signal to activate, but it is stuck in position and will not function. Yes, you can manually force the tray to open, but noting you can do will help make the tray go in/out using a button or remote.
The entire unit needs to replaced, unfortunately.

the humming noice is the dvd spinning trying to read the disc so we know that works take it apart and see if the laser is working d{dont look in the laser} and if that works take a q-tip and lightly wipe off the laser lightly move the laser up and down to make sure its not stuck and try to see if it works then

no these are legitamate questions, the one that wont eject is probably out of timing someone could have pushed the door closed instead of pushing the button a lot of people dont realize this can harm a player what you would have to do to fix this is open it with the power off then plug it in and let the power close it that will normally fix that problem. the one that reads no disk listen and feel for it to spin the disk when turned on if the disk dont spin it wont work let me know what it does or doesnt do. the x box could be a lot of things but listen for disk to spin in it also and get back with me some might be fixable some might not.due to cost

You state a problem here that is going to need a lot more info before a suggested fix could be provided. is this a new drive you added to your computer or a "factory installed" drive? If a new drive, did it come with "driver files" to be installed into Windows and did you install them? During installation, what questions were you asked and how did you answer them? By the way, my DVD drive shows up as a "CD Drive" in My Computer too, but it still reads & writes DVDs. Try right clicking on the drive in My Computer, click on "Properties" and then click on the "Hardware" tab. When the hardware screen opens, try clicking on "Troubleshoot" and follow the directions. This might work if you are in Windows XP.
