Sounds like a mechanical problem--in other words, the inside of the mouse is dirty. Probably has dust and stuff.
I'd suggest removing the base and trying to get all foreign matter out of it. Blow it out with compressed air.

Does each mouse have a connector to pc? I have an HP @MG-0637T that was given to me without any connection (usb port). Does it require one?

Yes of course it has connector. There are two types of connection, wired and wireless connection. Since your mouse is wireless, it needs a bluetooth connection between your computer. Make sure that the computer you will be using has a bluetooth capable function.

My laptop's hp compaq nc4010 mouse and keyboard not working

If you have opened the case you may have disconnected the mouse ribbon cable. Its a thin white ribbon cable that plugs into a 'slot' on the motherboard.
