ibm sound card is not faulty, because you are getting sound with your head phone. The head phone jack have two functions 1. to give output to head phone 2. to disconnect internal speakers when you plug in head phone. The jack for headphone in normal position not give connectivity to internal speakers. SOLUTION : REPLACE THE HEADPHONE JACK. I think it will help you.
Go to the Apple menu (Apple icon, top left) > System Preference > Sound
click on the output tab and make sure that the internal speakers are selected.
If they are selected and you still have the same issues you will need to call AppleCare 1-800-275-2273
check your audio driver, if it is ok, check your sound options if it is muted, volume control..all are fine..then could be your speakers..if you use head phone to check it, and it does not work at all, then your audio driver, reinstall it
HAHA i had the same problem so here is what i did...i stuck a head phone plug in the jack and smacked it a couple times and bam it works....i would suggest doing this if your lazy otherwise go to the apple store because obviously somthings not right in your laptop.
