I have a MacBook Pro laptop and an HP DeskJet 842C printer. I have been able to successfully print anything that I wanted, in both color and black, up until about 4 months ago. Thinking that my color cartridge was empty, I purchased a new one and put it in the printer. No color when I went to print. Thinking I had gotten a defective ink cartridge, I purchased another one and put it in the printer. Same thing. No color. I checked the printer to make sure everything was clean and it was. I had read some posts where people were having the same problem as I am. The answers were to check and make sure that the printer settings were not set for grayscale instead of color and if they were, to shut off the grayscale and turn on the color. The steps that were given to do so do not match what comes up when I try to do this. I cannot find where it has the grayscale and color boxes or whatever to check and uncheck. Can you help me? Thank you.

Delete the printer from your profiles.

with printer connected via usb, do a software update.


restart computer with connected via usb.


Check with manufacturer to see if there are any new drivers.

In the print menu (Command P), there is a drop-down menu toward the bottom of the screen.
One of the options is Quality & Media. Under this option, make sure that greyscale is not selected.

Hi, Try printing whatever you were wanting to print but click the drop down arrow right next to the printer selection tab. Then you should see a drop down menu about halfway down the menu, click it and select print settings. You should see another drop down menu called color, just click it and change it from grayscale to color.

Dennis, is this happening on all applications or is it just the one e.g. word. I have read in some cases this can be caused by a font conflict. You could open up font book within the applications folder and this will show you whether there are duplicate fonts open, I would resolve these duplicates and try printing again.

My HP DESKJET 842C prints test page in Black and white only not in color, how do I test my Color cartridge is working or not?

The driver for this printer, when used within Windows 7, is built-in or 'in-OS' so you do not have access to the HP solution center or HP Toolbox.

Printing the self-test report will show how the ink is dispensed and what levels of ink are available. If on this report there is nothing shown, the issue is likely related directly to the cartridges rather than a software issue.

There are steps on how to clean the cartridges as well as the underside of the carriage in case there is and debris or interferrance causing this issue.

Select the document which you want to print.
give the print command.
Open the printer properties.Look for the option features and printing
Select color printing .
Your printer will print the document successfully.

Printer wont print black, it only prints in color, also the printing fades

* change the properties of your printer --->> Printer icon-->>Properties-->> select color or black and white grayscale.

*clean the cartridge printhead through the computer or manually (remove cartridge and wipe with cotton cloth with water). Also, clean the scanner window (glass).

I replaced my color cartridge but my printer still only prints black and white. What do I have to do to print in color?


if you have cd that came with it ,, uninstall and reinstall should work then,, if you dont have cd,, then go to hp web site and dowload the printer files you need,, hope this help

Yes. The printer won't operate without both cartridges installed, even if one is empty.

The ink light blinks all the time since I replaced the color


The ink light flashes when the top cover is open...check the switch that tells the printer when the cover is closed.
