SOURCE: No depth reading while on plane.

Depending on your transducer type, you may have a liquid filled type that simply needs refilling. If this is the case check for leaks and get it redone. If not it could be transducer placement or cavitation under the hull.

SOURCE: boat won't plane

Check your prop hub. If you have a larger motor there are rubber bushings in the hub which can slip. This is a safety feature like shear pins. You may need to rebush the prop.

You also need the proper length motor for your transom. And you need enough power to overcome the drag and weight of a loaded boat. Check and see if the angle settings for the locking pin will provide an upward thrust to the hull and not plow the hull down.

SOURCE: Boat does not plane

the engine is a bit small but make sure its fully tilted down on the tilt pin adjustments ! how much gear or fuel tanks etc are at the rear of the boat and do you sit central of boat with steering and remote gear/throttle controls or at rear , weight moved forward will help and you could also fit doel finns to the cavitation plate above the prop which looks like a dolphins tail and these will increase lift and get you on the plane ! really a bigger engine like 75hp would be the answer ! what max hp rating is the boat ? try the above first and any more info you can give me would help give suggestions !

My lowrance elite 4 HDI goes black when i get on plane so my backtrack feature doesnt work

The speed of your boats travel only directly affects your sonars ability to read the water depth.
your backtrack feature is GPS based. These is not affected by your boat being on plane.

Your screen being black sounds like your sonar is losing bottom contact due to air bubbles passing under the transducer. This is a common occurrence with most boats.

Add some details regarding what your seeing and we can help you get a better handle on your difficulty.

Y does my 2003 mercury outboard 200 efi take so long to get by 21 foot pro craft out on a plane it is really slow

Check the size and pitch of the prop. By reducing the pitch you will get better hole shot out of the water ,but my be lose a little top end speed. This will be stamped or cast into the prop eg: 15x21 which stands for 15 inch diameter by 21 inches pitch.

My 88hp Johnson won't tilt up when moving in water unless I am going slow therefore I can't get topend speed what would cause this?

outboard motors some times are designed to not run at speed while tilted as the water pump inlet is above the water line and the engine will over heat and the pump impellor will be destroyed.. With an engine tilted the load from the propeller tends to lift the nose of the boat high and makes it unstable on the water . The best situation is to have the propeller tend to drive the nose down thereby promoting a planeing action that improves economy and speed Once the boat is on the plane you can cut back on the throttle and still maintain the same speed . Moving with the leg tilted should only be used to navigate shallow water at very slow speeds

What is powerboating?

From Wikipedia: Power boating describes activities performed in a motorized boat. Generally, a power boat has a high power-to-weight ratio and a hull design that allows for easy planing, which allows for higher speed and improved handling. Also, the shape of the actual boat is usually very streamlined, which minimizes air resistance and drag, therefore increasing speed. Power boats are often used recreationally, includingwaterskiing and wakeboarding.

Powerboating appeared as an event in the 1908 Olympics.

My fishfinder will not continue to read shallow depths as well as in shallow depths when drifting and occasionally running across the water. My unit is a lowrance 522c color gps/fishfinder.

Hello. Your observation is spot on and it is actually a characteristic that is always true when using sonar. Yes, your Lowrance uses the same sonar as a nuclear powered submarine does. The two factors you focus on, water depth and boat speed are perhaps, the two biggest factors when it comes to the quality of the fishfinder. The boat's engine should be in gear at an idle or just above. Experiment with your boat to find the best throttle location for good arches. Usually, a slow trolling speed works best. The depth of the fish can determine if the fish will arch on the screen. If the fish is in shallow water, the fish is not in the cone angle very long, making it difficult to show an arch. Typically, the deeper the fish, the easier it is to show an arch.

Proper set up for lowrance sonar

Where do you use your boat?

There are so many variables it's hard to fit it all here, but there are some excellent tutorials on the Lowrance website. The most important thing is to pick the right frequency, for the depth of the water. (200khz for less than 70', and 50 khz for greater depths). Depending on how serious you are about fishing, there are a lot of extras that you may never use. The key is to figure out which features will help you the most and forget about the rest.

You may also get some help at this link: FixYa Service Directory

It's common for SONAR to lose contact with the bottom at high speeds. The better the transducer installation, the faster you can go. Turbulence and bubbles will cause the SONAR to drop out. Lowrance's transducer installation guide explains it very clearly.
