Some older scanners are not supported by the newer versions of Apple OSX. This can be a real problem for owners of older printer/scanner equipment and windows 8/10 has driver issues with older equipment also.
HP is a great printer or scanner. They make a universal print driver and a universal scan driver which I have installed both in my macs and in my windows machines (I have both OSX and Windows machines at home and at work)
The universal scan drivers and universal print drivers may work on your unit. Also you may have to assign your printer a high static IP address and tell the computer and driver where to find it, as sometimes automatic pairing is not possible.
Example... Your router IP address is and it passes out DHCP addresses from 50 to 100 ( to
You can assign your printers in the house of office static IP address starting at .201 then .202 .203 etc...
Tell the driver you know the IP address and enter and the driver or HP universal driver will find the printer and link up no problem.

SOURCE: hp scanjet 3400c installation problem

No Way...
Problem with this scanner is: Microsoft has the wrong driver and HP delivers an uncertified driver that never gets itself correctly installed under XP. Scanner is likely to work just for one session. Do as I did. I am talking Dutch here.

Remove all software first and afterwards also folders like ProgramFiles\Hewlet Packard and other places were files were stored in. Maybe in Control Centre - System - Hardware Devices you may have Optical Devices - HP 3400C, Remove it also with right clicking and doing Undo Installation of the Driver and next unplug the scanner from the computer. Restart. Install the driver for migrating from early Windows version to XP. and, when done, restart with connecting the scanner when the computer is down. It now seems to be recognized and installed (like you must have seen before). Do not use the scanner on this stage. Now install the update Restart again. Go back to System - Hardware Devices where you now certainly find the scanner under Optical Devices. Click right on it and choose Properties and Install the Driver Again or something alike in English. On the question Must Windows Search For It? Pick 'Not This Time." Next with "Install From a Certain Location." Then choose "Do not Search, I Want to Install the Driver Myself." Now choose the third and last driver from the list. So one of HP, not from Microsoft. You are only asked the question This Driver is Not Digitally Signed, Still Use It? and click Yes or OK. Your problem is finally solved and the program PrecisionScan will also work. Do remove the program update.exe from the folder or when watching system internals - just do not agree for the update possibility changes.

Are you using the software from HP? It sucks. If the HP software is not working correctly, then Use the one provided my your operating system works great. Go your Control Panel, Printer and other Hardwares and click Scanners, make a shortcut to your task or start menu and Scan Away. For Faxes, etc. import in outlook or other email client, etc.

Hp deskjet 5100 wia driver

I don't know why your scanner is not working
This printer is supported by Windows 7. Therefore, if you are using Windows 7, you might try rolling back the driver, or updating it, or uninstalling it and letting it re-install next time you connect it/reboot the computer. All these things are done from the hardware device manager > printers in the OS
As WIA is contained within Windows, rather than an additional driver from HP, the steps above should resolve any issues that are due to a corrupt driver.
If you are using a Mac read this
This may not be why the scanner is not working though.

Did an automatic update and also removed microsoftoffice at same time. now i cant get my pc to rebot fully

Try this, while booting up your computer, continue to tap F8. You SHOULD get a screen with a list of options. From there choose Start in Safe Mode. Uninstall your updates, and then reboot the computer. Hopefully this resolves your issue and you will be able to restart windows normally. Microsoft unfortunately is notorious for coming up with driver updates for components which get installed with autoupdate, several times this will cause a component to stop working correctly, and cause hang up.

Trying to instal photosmart C4380 all in one wirelessly on toshiba L40-17M from supplied disc installed printer ok first time but scanner not recognised, scan button says computer connected but computer...

Photosmart C4380: good hardware, appalling software. Shameful that it's on the market at all.

You have to install the printer as USB first. Then, once it's all installed, load up the CD again and 'Add device', choosing the wireless option. It's crucial that you leave your USB cable in the whole time. Take it out right at the end. Once you've added a device, you'll have two printers installed. One will be called 'Copy 1' - that's the wireless one. It should all work okay, and you can delete the USB one.

When I did this everything seemed to work fine. BUT - after a wee while the software started playing up. The scan function didn't work at all, HP was depositing all sorts of bugs all over my computer, I had error messages coming up at shutdown, all sorts of gremlins.

So this is what I did.

I totally uninstalled all HP software.

I downloaded the updated Photosmart Basic Drivers from the HP website. They are here:

Once you've downloaded the file and run it, the new drivers will be installed but NO SOFTWARE. Again, you have to do the whole setting it up as USB and then leaving the cable in and adding the device wirelessly. But if you do this with the HP drivers and ignore the installation CD, then everything should work perfectly.

Of course this means no HP software at all. But who needs it? I use Microsoft's scanning software, which is fine, and it has no problem printing.

Basically HP's software is BLOATWARE that doesn't even work. It screws up your computer.

    Good luck!!

    Is printer "online"

Have you tried different usb cable and port?

Have you unistalled previous driver and the software package before installing complete new downloaded software and driver package from hp to suit

We know how tiring it is dealing with people and their little printers buy a new one or pay someone else to do it for you if it's too hard.

Now you know why they can be too expensive to fix due to time it can take to even diagnose any posible faults.
