Could it be that they said it was too expensive to repair?

Anything can be repaired but not always below the cost of a new one.

If this is what they told you it might be due to a main board failure, which really is too expensive to repair.

A 40cm fall does not normally cause this much damage though?

Is there any damage to the casing of the camera?
Can you see the lens unit trying to move inside when you switch it on?
Have you tried resseting the camera at the button located in the batttery compartment?
Does the camera make the welcome sound at all?

Answer these questions and I might beable to to give you more help.

Good luck.

Hi

Switch your camera to Setup on the control **** located on the top.

Take out the memory stick and press the reset button located inside the battery compartment.

Now switch on the camera and insert the memory stick.

If you do not get the error go to the little toolbox on the menu. Select the format option and proceed through the warning messages. Remeber you will loose all data on the memory stick.

Things should now work. If not some simple thing that sound bezare but has worked for me is pushing the memory stick in and out before the camera displays the error. Do this several times until the camera actually reads the stick and them format the stick first chance you get.

Good luck.

Hi Bella

That code means that the lens unit was unable to move from home position to switch on position.

These lens are extremely complex and I doubt if you could find someone able to repair the lens.

Therefore I suggest contacting Sony to find a accredited dealer to quote you on replacement of the lens.

My guess is it will cost half of what you originally paid for the camera.

Good luck.
