Connecting one network to another?

I have a PC on the first floor connected to a router on the second floor which is connected to a cable modem for internet access.
I will be installing a wireless (linksys) network on the first floor that needs to get to the internet modem and out on the second floor.
Using a wireless router connected to the PC on the first floor and using a different IP network, how do I get it to access the internet modem?

Re: connecting one network to another?

This is what I would do I would connect the wireless to the internet direct and allow all PC with wireless capabilities to access the net through that wireless irrespective to where I place the wireless router.  Alternative I would link the cable on on the second floor the one you use for the PC to access the net to access the the wireless it should automatic allocate IP addresses as each machine accesses the network.  The speed of that wirless is decreased as each wireless PC comes on line.

I have a DHG536C Cable modem from Comcast Does is have an internal router so I can use a simple Eithernet switch or hup to connect 2 computers or do I need to use an external router?

The DHG536C is a pure cable modem. You will have to purchase a router to establish a network with the two computers. Alternatively you could connect one PC to the modem and have a peer to peer LAN network between the two pcs. The PC connected to the cable modem will need to be on all the time. You will need a wireless or a LAN card for each of the 2 computers.

If you wnat to buy a separate router you can select something from this site.

Can I setup a cable modem with a router

You can if the router is wireless and you have a wireless card in your computers. If not, then you will have to upgrade the router to a wireless and get wireless cards in the computers or run a cable to the 2nd floor

Trouble connecting netgear wireless router to rca modem DCM425

First try connection the Yellow ethernet cable from the rca modem to your computer's network connection. If you get a connection this way, then your modem will work with a ethernet cable. If not, then call Comcast for help. The modem ethernet out to computer port must be connected to the wan line of the router. Then you can connect an ethernet cable from your computer network connection to one of the 4 ports of the router. For wireless connections you must set up the router and wireless adaptor with the same settings to connect. Follow the routers directions.
Good Luck

DHG535-2 and LAN switch issue

It sounds like the LInksys that they replaced was also a router. A router will route packets to multiple pc's that are connected to it. The cable modem just sees the router as 1 pc. When you use a switch, the cable modem will see all of your PC's. and Comcast just allows 1 pc. You will need to buy a router to use more than 1 PC which will be cheaper than using Comcasts Home Networking service which will network up to 4 pcs

How do I connect this router?

You will need at least two ethernet cables like the one that is currently connecting yur PC to your Comcast Modem. Use one cable to connect between your pc and any of the ports labled 1, 2, 3, or 4 on the router. Another ethernet cable should be connected between the modem and the port labeled WAN on the router. Then (if you havent already), turn off the power to all three, the modem, the router, and the pc. then, turn on the power to just the modem and wait until the lights on the front of it stablize (usually about 60 to 120 seconds). Then turn on the router and wait another 60 seconds. Finally, boot up the computer. You should be able to connect to the internet. the next step will be to set up the wireless part of the router.

Linksys Router and Modem

Get one router working first with the modem following the standard instructions. If you've been messing with the router settings, use the Reset procedure described in the manual.

When your computer is able to access the internet, you've got the first router working.

I assume you want the second router to make more ethernet ports available.

Disconnect the computer from the first router, and plug it into the second. DONT CONNECT IT TO THE MODEM.

Again, reset it to the factory defaults. Open your browser and type in and login to the router. Find the DHCP server setting, and disable DHCP.

Get another ethernet cable and connect it to one of the ethernet ports on the first router, and the other end to an ethernet port on the second router. DONT USE THE WAN PORT.
Unplug each router, then replug them.

You should now be able to use any of the ethernet ports on either router (reboot your PC after doing the above).

Ps3 to internet

Difficult to explain but i'll try:

You got 2 options.

1. Buy a router and connect the modem to the router wan port and find a manual how to set it up. Then through your router you can connect (a lot of) pc's, laptops or ps3.

2. Buy an extra network card and a crosslink network cable cat5e. Use software like gatekeeper to connect both to internet.

maybe the second option is the best because sometimes isp providers register you mac adress(unique adress of your network device). It's not the fastest solution.

The first is the most professional but require some knowledge of routers, ppoa, pptp, fixed ip, Wan ip, and lan ip.

I did the second option a lot with speedtouch modems and draytek routers.

Good luck, let me know if you need more assistence.

Motorola SB5101

ya u should have a router instead of a modem because modem provide only one ip address>and there is no DHCP server in the switch or hub>so buy one router which has 4 ether net port and connect it directly to the modem and connect ur two pc's behind the router then both will get a seperate ip address from the router both will go online
the connection is
modem-->ether net cable to the inter net port on the router-->and two ether net cable from both pc's to the 1 and 2 ether net jack on the router reboot all the devices>and modem+router+pc's then it will work>rate me solved if its helps thx
