AKAI TV won't play new LG DVR/VCR combo

I have an Akai (model CTD1390) which I used for 2 years with a LG DVR/VCR combo. Today I had to replace the combo for a new LG DVR/VCR combo (model RC897T). I cannot bring up the combo controls on the TV to setup and/or program it even though it is connected correctly. LG confirms that. I used the Akai remote to change the input to video but the screen in blank so the combo programs don't show to program nor can I play a VCR or DVD on the tv even though it appears to be playing on the combo player.
