Maxtor 500gb internal hard drive

I have a maxtor 500gb internal hard drive but for some reason my computer does not recognize its full capacity. It only reads 31.4gb. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

This looks like it is a jumper settings issue unless this is a really old computer and you formatted it with FAT. Make sure your jumper (located on the back of the drive) is set to either Master or Slave and not the drive capacity limiting one (which is usually 31 GB if I remember correctly). The markings for proper setting are usually on the label of the drive.

Unfortunately SOME of that is NORMAL, I asked the same thing about my WD 160 gb, it reads as 149 gb. They explained it goes to the operation of the unit, or some such thing.
So why doesn't the Mfg. sell it as 150gb for my case?
--- However you are missing much more HD space!
Did you try uninstalling the drivers?
Are you running XP or Vista?
If some earlier OS it may not work right without special drivers for Win98
Have you tried to update the drivers from the Mfg. website? Does the Mfg. have tech support?

To fix/restore to full capacity, you may need to delete the existing partition and re-partition then reformat again.

Most old computers have limitations on the CMOS/BIOS as to how big the capacity of the HD that it can recognize.  Windows however would recognize big HD size and therefore can partition, format and check.

Alternately, a third party disk utility program may be used such as Partition Magic.

Hope this be of some use/help. Post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

I upgraded my hard drive and cloned my old info onto the Toshiba external hard drive. Now it only recognizes the capacity of the hard drive as 465 gb instead of 2 tb. How do I reset that back to 2 tb?

by up grading do you mean fitting a new hard drive
BY your statement you downloaded all of the data from the old hard drive onto an external 2tb hard drive ( to save everything I imagine )
if that is the case then the computer will only recognize the capacity of the new hard drive which would have been a 500gb unit
there is always a loss of capacity in a hard drive for internal workings and programs so what the computer is reading is most likely the capacity of the new hard drive
if you want to read the capacity of the external hard drive , you will have to click on it separately then go to properties and it will read total capacity and unused capscity

Hd will not read and puts up error code 43

I had the same problem with a WD external hard drive. I tried it in multiple computers and it was never recognized. I uninstalled the driver from the same screen where you see the error 43 message, then swapped the USB cable connecting the drive... and then the computer detected it. It suggested a chkdsk which I ran, it looks like its back to normal now
