I have a nov 1999 jeep grand cherokee (WJ the newer rounded one) my steering works and feels fine, however when I take the steering to the max, either right or left it starts making a whine sound, at first it didn't worry me but now, when I take to the max either side it starts to draw smoke when I hold it at the max point. Only at the max of the powersteering it draws sound and smoke the rest of the positions nothing, and it steers pefectly anyhow. Also noticed under the car dripping of a few drops of what I believe is power steering fluid. Anyone what the smoke could be. Cheers
SOURCE: steering makes a whining noise - where is the fluid reservoir?
the suspect part for a power steering whine is the power steering pump, flush (very important) the system and replace the PS pump..

Just a heads up, $10 bucks will buy you a seal kit for the P.S. pump. I topped mine off for a couple months, then the oring on the high pressure line (from pump, front center) blew and dumped the reservoir in a matter of miles.
The line can be a stinker to get off, recommend driving the car for a few minutes to heat up the pump a little. Don't forget the 20MM wrench.

power steering pump might need more oil (whining noise). generally power steer pumps take automatic transmission fluid. there should be a reservoir above the pump only fill this a little bit then start the car and turn left to right and recheck level. fluid should only be low if there is a leak at power steer pump/lines or steering rack,

Sure, I'll tell youhow to solve the problem, but it will cost you $199.95.

it could still be the pump is it making a whining noise, and does the fluid smell really burnt.jack the car up and put it on jack stands set the e-brake and chock the rear tires so it can not roll, then start the car and see if there is any binding the the steering rack if there is you will notice a small jump to the rack as the wheel is turned,or a shifting on the mounting bolts that hold the rack to the cross member. If the car goes down the road fine with out a bunch of shacking or wobbling then I think I would replace the pump and have the system thoroughly flushed.I hope this helps
