Innovage Universal Remote

Well I have an Emerson VCR/DVD combo and I can't get the remote to work with that properly. I look in the code list and the code for it is not in it, how can a remote made by emerson not work for a VCR/DVD combo made by Emerson? I got it to program, but it programmed the DVD button to the whole thing, so I can turn it on and off whether it's on DVD or VCR mode but I can't use the arrow keys for any DVD functions or anything like that, it does however work with changing channels and such on the vcr side, but there's no way to switch between the two with the remote.

I have a unversal remote and i can not get it to work for the dvd/vdr I have from magnavox....can someone please help me
