Question about Frigidaire FRS26R4C Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

Everything freezes in the refrigerator

Everything in the fridge froze - even to the point that the housing for the water filter froze and split open in at least 2 places.  Now water is leaking throughout, though I effectively shut off the water by turning off the ice maker.  Even set below 1, the fridge was registering a temp around 34 degrees (meat thermometer left in for 12-16 hours.

Now I'm faced with fixing the water filter housing, replacing the filter, and fixing whatever caused it to freeze over to begin with.  What to do?

Well, I thawed out the damper - or I think I did.  However, I turned the refrigerator temp back to 2-3 (somewhere in there) and put a glass of water with a thermometer in it late last night.  6 hours later, the water was beginning to freeze again... and cold air is blowing like crazy out of the damper.  If I turn the temp control completely off, it shuts off.

... well, I thought it shut off.  In reality, it apparently slows down.  I went home over lunch and the glass of water is now frozen solid, thermometer is reading about 25 degrees F... and that's with the temp setting set as low as possible, i.e. off.

Called a local repair dude (found him out here via the "find a local repairman") and he's telling me the baffles need to be replaced.  Does baffles = damper?

Thanks for the help!  Based on the information you gave me, I was able to contact Electrolux customer service and they agreed to comp the parts if I would pay for the service call... which is a great deal since this fridge is now 4 years old.  The tech was here awhile ago and he identified the problem just as you did.  You were right on target!  Thanks!

Frigidaire FRS26H5ASB5 side by side Refrigerator will not shut off. It is freezeing everything in the refrigerator. I have turned the dials for the frige to 0 and the freezer controls to 1. and it still freezes everything in the frige. If I turn the freezer dial to 0 It will stop running.

Your damper that controls the air to the fridge side is stuck open. It can be caused by moisture getting on it and freezing it so it wont close or by a failure in the electrical circuit that controls it. There was a service bulletin from about 3-4 years ago about defective control assemblys. I have replaced several and as far as I know Frigidaire is still replacing some of them for free if they fall under the model and serial numbers that were affected.
You can tell if it is frozen by turning the controls off and thawing the damper at the upper left rear of the fridge section with a hair dryer.. After you have it thawed out, turn the controls back on and you should hear the damper door motor running. Keep your thermometer in it and check it after a while and see if it shuts off before it freezes.
Post back with the complete model and serial numbers and I will try to locate the service bulletin at my shop computer tomorrow.

Yes, I am sure that's what he means. Your model is not under the service letter I was refering to, it is newer than those.  Either the damper is not closing completely or the thermostat is not shutting it down when it is supposed to. If the temp gets below freezing and you can still feel a strong airflow, but the damper closes when you turn it completely off, it sounds like a thermostat problem. You can check the damper by sticking a small screwdriver or knife blade into the damper and then turn the control off and see if you feel the damper actually close. The motor may be turning but the link that is hooked to the door be broken.

Here is how the system works

You have  2 thermostats that control the machine. The freezer thermostat will turn on the compressor and evaporator fan when the freezer calls for cooling. The refrigerator thermostat opens the damper to allow air to come into the fridge side and turns on the evaporator fan if it isn't already on. This way you don't run the compressor just to blow some cool air into the fridge if the freezer is already down around zero. This saves energy over the older and more plain models.

So you have 2 working pieces that will cause the fridge to freeze. either the damper sticks open or the fridge thermostat doesn't close it.

I have seen air leaks around the damper cause this, but only after one has been replaced and not installed properly.

Hope this helps. Post back if you want to know anything else.

GE Water Dispenser not working

Sounds like the water tank in the fridge section froze and split open causing a leak. Plus, the water feed line to the dispenser has frozen where it runs up through the freezer door- guessing your trimmer line only goes about 5" into the tube?
There is a water line heater kit that GE makes : Refrigerator Heating Element WR49X10173 .
Then, buy two quick disconnects 5/16" and about 10 feet of 5/16" plastic tubing- use the tubing and disconnects to replace the cracked water tank and you should be good to go... Refrigerator Water Line 5210JA3004K

My fridge just started running water from under, not just a Lil drip,I even have to shut the main water line off....what do I do now?.

My refrigerator did this when the fridge temperature control door got stuck open and froze everything in the refrigerator. I tracked down the problem to a connection in my water supply filter. I just removed the filter and spliced the line. I doubt the same thing happened to you but you can probably find the leak by tracing the water supply to the ice maker/water dispenser.

Water Filter Frozen

Air blowing directly on things like a water bottle has frozen it solid ( in the REFRIGERATOR SIDE! -- Block airflow BUT... I think the problem is YOU NEED TO CLEAN ( blow out with air!...the ONLY WAY) YOUR CONDENSOR COILS ( in the back, outside...behind the cardboard cover nowadays) Your fan has to run too long ( because refrigeration is the "removal of heat"...this is what those coils do but they are insulated with dust!)...too long blowing to achieve the same temp result = Frozen Stuff

I don't know what happened to my refrigerator but it is starting to freeze everything. I couldn't change filter because it was stuck, frozen in place. So i had to turn the fridge off so it could thaw out...

1 setting on a fridge is as cold as it can get so it will be close to freezing
should be set on 4 or 5
next if it still is freezing then the thermostat is failed and you will need to replace it

Fridge is freezing in weird spots, the water filter froze, it was time to replace it, so I did and the new one froze as well. Also, are the water filters a one shot deal? I took it out to see if it was...

Make sure the evaporator fan in the freezer is running when the compressor runs and make sure the vent from the freezer to the fridge is open allowing for the air to circulate. There is also a vent at the bottom to allow the air to return to the freezer. Make sure it's open.

You may need to let the filter dry out so it will return to it's original size and shape so you can get it back in.

It sounds like the fan in the freezer behind the rear panel is not working. You should be able to hear it. It won't run with the door open so hold the door switch in.

Fridge area freezing food; water dispensor line freezing

sometimes when the cooler weather comes in you may need to chnge temp setings to a warmer setting to prevent some items from freezing ie: leafy vegetables, water bottles, eggs, etc etc.

now if you are having total freeze up of everything in the ref section then you could have bad temp control or damper assy.
