My CD/DVD drive is no longer reading the discs being inserted. it makes a funny noise like it is trying to read the disc, but it never shows anything, not even a error message. Is there a way I can fix it manually, because I do not want to send it back to the company and spend a lot of money.

DVD drive read/burn problem

From the description the new DVD driver is defective and should be returned if still under warranty. The only concern that I have is the replacement you got is identical to the original and that it is not a aftermarket product, because they don't have the same specifications as the original.

The disc drive on my acer Aspire 5742G will not read any music cd's or dvds. I makes plenty of noise as though it is trying to open it but nothing!

The CD/DVD drive may need reseating to make proper electrical connection. Remove this drive and insert it back into the laptop.
Next try cleanibg the drive.
The laser lens maybe dirty, use a CD/DVD lens cleaning kit to clean the lens int the drive.
If this does not fix your problem then the CD/DVD drive is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Cd software disc will not load on to my computer. Isn't being recognized

If in case the cd was not recognized upon loading it to the computer you may do the following to check wether the cd is faulty or the cd drive.
  1. Verify that the correct disc (CD/DVD) is used when prompted to insert the disc.
  2. For programs on DVD, verify that the drive containing the DVD is a DVD drive and not a CD-ROM drive. Most DVD drives will have DVD printed on the front of the drive. For programs on DVD, consider the following:
  • DVD drives can read both DVD's and CD's.
  • CD-ROM drives can read only CD's.
  1. If multiple disc drives (e.g., CD-ROM and CD-RW, or DVD and DVD-RW, or CD-ROM and DVD-RW, etc.) exist on the computer that can read the disc (refer to the items under Step 2), insert the CD or DVD into the other drive and try the program again.
  2. If you are attempting to install a program and the installation does not begin after inserting the CD/DVD into the proper drive, refer to the program's instructions for the installation procedure.
  3. Clean the CD/DVD in the following manner:
  1. Place a small amount of nonabrasive liquid soap on the shiny side of the CD/DVD.
  2. Using your fingertips and warm water, gently rub the soap on the CD/DVD in a circular motion.
  3. Rinse the CD/DVD thoroughly and dry it using a clean, soft T-shirt or lint-free towel. (Do not use paper towels or tissue paper.)
  1. Try to use a different CD or DVD in the drive to see if that disc can be read.
  2. If possible, insert the problem CD or DVD into the DVD or CD drive of another computer to see if the issue persists.

Dvd/cd is not working

You can follow these methods to try to isolate and resolve the problem. Use these methods in the order in which they are presented.

Method 1: Clean the disc

When you have problems with a CD or DVD drive, always check the disc first to see whether it is damaged or dirty. To clean the disc, follow these steps:

1. Remove the disc from the drive.
2. Clean the disc with a disc cleaning kit or by gently wiping the silver side of the disc from the center outward with a dry, soft, lint-free, cotton cloth.

Note Do not use a paper cloth, and do not use a circular motion to clean the disc. These can scratch the disc.
3. Reinsert the disc in the CD or DVD drive.
If the computer can read the disc, you are finished.
If the computer still cannot read the disc, go to step 4.
4. Try again to clean the disc by using a cloth dampened with water, or dampened with a commercial CD or DVD cleaning solution.
5. Dry the disc thoroughly, and then reinsert it in the CD or DVD drive.
6. If the computer can read the disc, you are finished.
If the computer still cannot read the disc, go to method 2.

Method 2: Check the disc for damage

If the disc is clean, check whether it is damaged. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Remove the disc from the drive, and then examine the disc for scratches or cracks.
2. If the disc is damaged, try another disc to see whether the CD or DVD drive can read it.
3. If the computer still cannot read a disc, there may be a problem with the drive. Go to method 3 to troubleshoot the CD or DVD drive.
If the computer can read the other disc, there is a problem with original CD or DVD. Contact the manufacturer of the damaged disc to obtain a replacement.

Method 3: Try a different disc drive

If the disc is clean and undamaged, check whether there is a problem with the drive. To do this, follow these steps:

1. If the computer has more than one disc drive, insert the disc in a different CD or DVD drive to see whether it can read the disc.
If your computer does not have more than one disc drive, you can insert the disc in a different computer.
2. If the other CD or DVD drive can read the disc, there may be a problem with your CD or DVD drive. Go to method 5.
If the other CD or DVD drive cannot read the disc, the disc may not be compatible with the drive. Go to method 4.

Method 4: Make sure that the disc is compatible with the drive

Check the following list to make sure that the disc that you are trying to use is compatible with your CD or DVD drive.

* A DVD disc is incompatible with a standard CD drive.
* A CD-RW disc is incompatible with a CD drive that does not support CD-RW discs.
* A DVD disc is incompatible with a drive that does not have a DVD logo on the front.

If the disc is compatible, go to method 5.
If the disc is incompatible, use a compatible disc or contact the vendor for a compatible replacement.

Method 5: Use Windows Update to check for updated drivers
If the disc is compatible with your CD or DVD drive, check for updated drivers that the CD or DVD drive may be missing.

Good luck

CD/DVD Is Not Recognized

CD-read and DVD-read issues can be caused by many sources. Perform the procedures presented in this General Computer Advice article when troubleshooting CD-read and DVD-read issues.

Begin with the first procedure and continue through the list. Try using the CD or DVD after each procedure is completed. For any procedure that requires changing current system settings, record the original settings before completing the procedure.

Player shows '' No Disc'' even when inserted with a disk

When player says no disk, even if the disk inside, and you hear a whirring and clicking noise when you insert a disk, that means that the CD lens is dirty or defective, and the CD drive cannot read the initial CD track, and returns no disk.

Try first using a CD cleaner disk, if that does not work, then you will need to take the apart the unit to clean lens with isopropyil alcohol and cotton sticks.

Inserted disc press play grinding sound and disc left scrapped

If your xbox box it's new I would take it back and get another one, becase you do probable have problems with your dvd drive and it will keep scratching the games. the laser on the drive doesn't work as hard when playing a music cd than when it plays a game or a dvd.

If you don't want to take it back, then play a couple dvds and if it reads then fine then you could try again. it shiudn't take more than ten second to read a game so if its taking longer just get it out.
