Permanent error 06. 17-85 lens damaged when an attempted theft resisted. Sent to Canon authorised repairer. Fixed back onto 40D and when camera switched off and on again I have a permanent error 06 message - sensor cleaning malfunction. Camera had been working quite well for 3000 pictures following the incident and before lens remounted on camera. No-one seems to know what to do other than pay for a new sensor. Expensive. Help!!!

- Camera was smnatched through the window of a minibus. I pulled, he pulled and I ended up with the camera. No impact but the tugging overstretched the lens and the barrel broke.
I had another lens that worked well(3000+pics) and then when I got home I used a second lens as well. (?200-300 pics) while the lens went off.
After many weeks the lens was repaired and returned - £150).
I mounted it, took a couple of shots then switched off. The next (or succeeding) day I wanted to test the lens and switched on....error 06. This was a camera fault independent of whatever lens I used. I did not dare put the newly mended lens onto any other body in case a fault was give to that body too.
The repairers blame the fact that I did not switch the camera off when changing my lens. I never do. I cannot see in the book the advice that I should.
The sensor worked perfectly well for 15 months, perfectly well for 3 months following the incident and failed only when the repaired lens was remounted, the camera switched off and on again.
To me is feels like a software fault from electronics of the lens.
Autofocus is now unreliable, failing to pick up focus on my wife who had plenty of contrast.
Currently the camera and les are with the repairers again.
The incident was in February.
Beware of asking a repairer to write off a lens in an insurance claim. They may prefer to try to fix it.......and then mend the camera as well - £330 quoted.
Cheers

Was the camera and the lens sent back for repair? Does it work okay with other lenses?

It does sound like the sensor was possibly damaged or at the very least weakened in the incident but if it has worked for 3000 pictures since then, you will probably have to pay for the new sensor.

It most likely was a short in the repaired lens that caused the sensor to go bad over time.

I have been shooting with Canon cameras and lenses for many years and I do not always turn off power before switching lenses. It is not a big deal.
