Could you please let me know how I can change the settings so my answers come out in decimals and not in fractions??

Re: Change number settings

Press MODE then scroll through the options until you see "Exact/Approximate". Press the right arrow to select this and scroll down to option 3 "approximate". Hit Enter twice to save this setting.

The calculator has two Input/Output modes, MthIO and LineIO. In MthIO the results are displayed as fractions or as radicals or a mixture of fractions and radicals. What it means, is that in MthIO the calculator does exact calculations. Radicals in denominators are gotten rid of by rationalization, fractions are reduced to the same denominators before addition or subtraction. Fractions are reduced to simplest form.

In LineIO all results are displayed as decimal numbers.

If a result is exact (fractions and radicals) it can be changed to decimal form by pressing the S To D key, the one above the DEL key.

MthIO is the default IO mode. To set it, press SHIFT MODE and select 1:MthIO. To set LineIO as the IO mode, press SHIFT MODE and select 2:LineIO

If you enter an improper fraction or a mixed fraction with the the [a b/c] key it will be displayed as a fraction. This result being displayed you can press the [F-D] key to convert the fraction to decimal. If you do nothing else and you press the [F-D] key again, the original fraction will be restored.

However, it seems that you cannot enter an arbitrary decimal number and convert it to a fraction. The [F-D] key seems to work one way : from a fraction to a decimal number. You will only recover a fraction if the original number was a fraction.

Since you bent on deactivating the very features that make your calculator so versatile and so powerful, here it is.

Press [SHIFT][MODE][2:LineIO] and you will see no more fractions, nor radicals etc. You asked for it.

Hope it helps.

To change from Fraction display to Decimal display on the Casio fx-300ES (and probably other calculators)

1) Press the "SHIFT" button

2) Press the "MODE/SETUP" button

3) Press the "2" button

This Changes it to LINEIO (Decimal)

Doing all of the above but pressing the "1" button instead of the "2" puts it back into MATHIO mode (Fraction)

Hope this Helps

You have to set how the calculator handles numbers. To do this follow these steps:
1. Press the 'MODE' button. This brings up the calculator's main settings page.
2. Scroll down until you reach a field titled 'Exact/Approx...'. This is the setting for how the calculator handles numbers, whether it will show the exact answer (which is usually in fraction format) or whether it will show an approximate number (which will be in decimal format).
3. Press the right arrow which will bring up the options for that setting. You must now choose between three ways of handling numbers:
-'1:AUTO' will determine which type of answer the calculator will give based on what numbers you want it to calculate (e.g. if you want an answer in decimal format just add a decimal somewhere in your problem).
-'2:EXACT' will automatically display all answers in either whole number format or in fraction format.
-'3:APPROXIMATE' will automatically display all answers in decimal format.
4. After you have selected one of those options pres enter one more time to get out of the 'MODE' dialogue and return to the 'HOME' screen. Now try a problem and see what happens.
Personally I like using 'AUTO' because then I don't have to keep returning to 'MODE' when I want either or.
Hope this helped, I had the same problem when I first started using the TI-89.
