Question about Mitsubishi XL1XU Multimedia Projector

1 Answer

Mitsubishi XL1XU Projector

The projector has been sent for repair several times now. The latest problem was with the ballast to correct the lamp ignition. How often does this occur in these projectors and is this a common one for other projectors as well? Is there an explanation of this problem and what causes it?

Hi there

The most common cause for a Ballast to go faulty is power failures & power spikes and off course lightning.

I normally advise my clients to hook up a UPS to the Projector just to make the power supplied to the Projector more even and smooth.

Ballast problems however occurs more than often on any model of Mitsubishi I have found.

Lamp light flashes amber without the lamp ever turning on, then projector shuts down in a minute or two

Based on what you're describing, it sounds like a failure in the lamp ballast itself. The projector will probably need to be sent for service.

If you have a spare lamp, that would be the first thing to try. However, if it isn't that, it is likely the ballast.

I have a infocus IN35 that at 100 hours burnt out a bulb. Thinking that it was just a bulb problem I bought a new bulb and it lasted 20 minutes. a t.v.repair shop said its probably the ballast that is the...

It is not a common problem. Ballasts rarely need repairs. Have you reset the lamp hours to zero after installing new bulb? If, yes to confirm about ballast please ask the TV repair shop man whether previously he had repaired any DLP projector. There is lot of difference in technology of DLP projector & TV (except DLP Projection TV). The problem could be in the projector main board. The lamp lights after getting Lamp ON signal from the projector main board. As the lamp ignites the ballast sends the signal of Lamp Lit. If the projector board senses that any blower/exhaust fan or colour wheel is not running then it will send a signal to Switch OFF the lamp. If you are tech-savvy then do as follows to check about lamp & ballast. Remove 5 pin connector from the projector. Connect projector to mains supply. Get a 5V DC power supply. Connect +ve to pin 3 & -ve to pin 4 of the ballast connector from this supply. The lamp should light. If it does not light then there is problem in the ballast (if the lamp is new). To give a chance you can check it for your lamp which lasted 20 minutes. Generally ballasts are made by OSRAM. You can get the ballast from OSRAM dealer. You will need the part number for that. Take out the ballast, it is there on it.

I have an Optoma DS303 Projector and it won't turn on. The power button flashes when i hold it down.

How old is the projector?? First, unplug the unit and check the lamp--A healthy lamp should have clear glass--not darkened, smoky, bulged, or blistered. Sometimes, by simply unplugging and then re-inserting the lamp, you cause the contacts to get a better connection, thereby making ignition easier. This is the simple stuff. If you have another, known-good lamp, insert it and try to get the projector to fire up. If this fails, or if after installing the original lamp the unit still won't kick on, the problem will need to be addressed by a service facility. When trying to turn on, you hear a "clicking" or small snapping sound but no lamp ignition, that is a symptom of a bad ballast(the circuit that ignites and keeps the lamp burning). Also, no sound may be heard. You can also look into the main lens and try to see small "lightning" flashes as the ballast tries to ignite the bulb. Usually, the ballast will try to ignite the lamp several times and, failing that, the unit is programmed to shut down.Hope I helped you.---Rick

There is no picture when i hit the power. the lamp light blinks once. also the lamp is pretty new.

Just from your description, the problem sounds like a "ballast" problem. That's the circuit that controls the lamp. It initially ignites the lamp and then keeps it burning. Just to be sure, remove the lamp and inspect it. There should be no dark spots on it or bulges, etc. Since you have a new lamp, chances are low that it would be bad--if possible, return to where you got it from and test your projector with a known-good lamp. Classic ballast failure symptoms are just what you described...Is the projector under warranty?? Normally the ballast is over 100 to several hundred dollars depending on make, model, etc...Rick

Panasonic TY-LA1000 has good lamp, but black screen. light is blinking green, then solid green, then after some time goes red?

We have a PT-50LC14. We replaced the lamp 6 months ago with a TY-LA1000 bulb we bought from a company online (not directly from Panasonic) and it worked for 6 months. Then the TV started turning off on it's own...sometimes it would not come back on for an hour or so. We called the lamp company and we luckily had 1 day left on our 6 month warranty!! They sent us a replacement bulb and the TV would never power on. It would try to power up, but the bulb would never ignite. The power light would flash and then the lamp light would flash every 5 seconds. I had a friend that has the same type of TV and she ordered her bulb directly from Panasonic. I borrowed her lamp and it powered right up. We then called the online company and they sent us yet another replacement bulb, and I tried it today and it works. It seems like these TVs are very particular about the type of bulb used. Next time, we will be ordering ours directly from Panasonic and just paying the extra $100. We have been without our big screen for 2 very long months! I had called a local tv repair shop, called Panasonic directly, and read through countless internet forums, and I thought we were going to have to replace the ballast or get a ballast repair kit and start messing with the circuit board.
