Wireless set up

I have a toshiba 1805 w/ Windows ME. We just had a wireless system put in our home and I'm trying to "make" the computer wireless. I have a Zonet IEEE 802.11g pen drive. Will this work on my computer? If not, what do I need to get?

Re: wireless set up

As long as your home wireless network is 802.11g (as opposed to a or b ). I see no reason why that should not work.

all you should need to do is install the software first, then plug in the usb wireless adapter,  once that is done you should then be able to "discover" the local wireless networks, select YOUR network from the list (you may need to enter security details if a WEP key is used), once that is done then all you need to do is change the connection settings in Internet Explorer to "Dial if LAN is not available" and change the LAN settings to "Auto detect settings"

I hope this helps :D

I have an old Toshiba Satellite 1805-S273 that has Windows ME. I would like to upgrade the operating system in order to give the laptop to my 5-year old son to play educational games. I purchased Windows...

You will find that Win7 will not work on the laptop, it is too old. You may get away with Win2000 or maybe XP, bearing in mind most of the drivers now are no longer available.
It will work with Win98.
I have browsed the net and cannot find any upgrades apart from Ubuntu
Win7 need an awful lot of RAM to work properly, Vista also but XP considerably less for XP home.

Toshiba Satellite 1805-s253 memory upgrade

Usually this means it supports 512 mb of "Single sided" ram, which is rarer and more expensive... the usual ram you buy now is double-sided.. which will often only see one of the sides in older machines.

Toshiba sat. 1805-S254

I am currently using the laptop model that you described. Go to toshiba support, click download, click portables, click satellite, and where it says: choose model, click show older models. Type in your satellite model on the search bar, (1805-S254) and click 1805-S254 in the results and hit GO. Now, the second thing from the top of the list of drivers says: BIOS. click the plus. Find: ACPI Flash BIOS version 1.10 for Satellite 1800/1805-S204/254/274 (v1.10; 10-23-2001; 671K)
and click it. Download the file and run it. Now follow the directions to make a BIOS floppy disk. After the disk is created, restart the computer. When the screen that says: Toshiba comes on, hit F12 to boot from a different device. Then it gives you a bunch of options. Hit the letter on the keyboard that tells the computer to boot from floppy disk. Then it should erase your current bios and rewrite the old one in. DO NOT update the BIOS! In the new BIOS, toshiba has a file that DOWNCLOCKS your processor. This is what makes your computer run so slow. Now people have complained that computer has overheated and shutdown but since i've downgraded the BIOS, it's been running just fine! Hope this helps! If it doesn't, email me at:
